Dear Microscopy Confocal List,

Does anyone have some experience with shipping biological tissues from Canada to the US ? I am planning to image zebrafish cleared tissues at our location in Boston, MA and these tissues will be sent from Canada. They will be in DBE. Are there any forms we need to fill-in or anything else we should do ?

Best regards,

Hi Vincent, we've done this a number of times. In general, you need
'expanded service international air' shipping for anything biological
especially if it is on ice. We use FedEx here at the University. You will
need to package it according to these regulations:
http://www.un3373.com/info/regulations/ and you will want to declare it
Category B if it doesn't contain pathogens. On the outside of the box you
need a bio sticker and a dry ice sticker if you pack with dry ice. (
images.fedex.com/downloads/shared/packagingtips/pointers.pdf ) In addition
to the FedEx waybill you need a commercial invoice (3 copies) with the CAT
B UN3373 declaration written in the description (if no pathogens) of all
three copies. (
http://www.fedex.com/ca_english/services/international/customsforms/documents/ci.html
) Disclaimer: I am not a customs or shipping professional and I am just
going by the procedure our lab has used in the past, but as far as I know
this should do it.

Good luck!
Craig

Hi Craig,

Thank you so much for your very detailed answer.
It is super helpful for someone that has never done it!
