The University of Sydney - Job Announcement

Hello from Sydney,

My name is Vanessa Duke and I work for the University of Sydney. I sit in the research team within our recruitment division and am currently partnering with the Faculty of Science in an effort to locate suitable candidates for the appointment of Research Associate / Postdoctoral Research Associate, Stellar Interferometry.

When doing some preliminary research I discovered this listserv and thought it would be a great place to ask for some assistance from professionals already working in the field...

Given the focus of the position is around optical/infrared instrumentation or long-baseline optical/infrared interferometry I wanted to get in touch with members of this list to see if you were able to point me in the right direction and possibly provide some advice on the best avenues through which to get a communication out to individuals who may be interested in a new challenge (and a move to the sunny shores of Sydney!).

I am really looking for some advice on potential advertising mediums, such as journals, forums and associations and potentially any other listerv/mailing list which may be helpful in spreading the word...

A little more about the position:

Applications are invited for a Research Associate / Postdoctoral Research Associate in the Sydney University Stellar Interferometer (SUSI) Group in the Sydney Institute for Astronomy.

You will be expected to participate heavily in instrumentation: in particular the development of the Micro-arcsecond University of Sydney Companion Astrometry (MUSCA) instrument and interferometer system upgrades applicable to automatic observing with SUSI. When complete, MUSCA will be able to precisely measure the positions of stars in binary systems, enabling the astrometric detection of extrasolar planets.

You will be offered the opportunity to exploit the twin PAVO instruments, which have the highest angular resolution at optical or infrared wavelengths in both hemispheres. In addition, the group at the University of Sydney is leading world efforts in aperture-masking interferometry science and instrumentation, and this position offers the opportunity to participate in this research. You will have an interest both in instrumentation and science that you wish to pursue within the group.

The position is for 2 1/2 years subject to the completion of a satisfactory probation period for new appointees with the possibility of further offer of employment depending on funding and need. Membership of a University approved superannuation scheme is a condition of employment for new appointees.

Remuneration package: a competitive remuneration package is available (consisting of a base salary of $61 253 – $74 606, leave loading and up to 17% employer’s contribution to superannuation).

More specific information about the positions can be found here; Research Associate / Postdoctoral Research Associate, Stellar Interferometry

Thanks for your time and I’m really looking forward to hearing from you all shortly.

Regards,

Vanessa
