The research uses in situ hybridization, fluorescence spectral imaging with confocal and wide-field microscopes, and novel algorithms for computational analysis. This is an exciting and fast-paced project in fundamental technique development with broad application in biology.
Duties: Responsibilities may include but are not limited to: protocol development; design of probes using molecular databases; preparation of plaque and saliva samples obtained from volunteers; growth of biofilms from natural plaque inocula or defined mixtures; fluorescent in situ hybridization; spectral imaging microscopy with confocal and wide-field fluorescence microscopes; data analysis; maintenance of bacterial cultures; and general lab organization and maintenance.
Conditions: (no unusual working conditions)
Education: SKILLS/EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE: Applicants must hold a bachelor’s or master’s degree in biology or a related field and must have research experience in molecular biology. Microscopy experience and knowledge of microbiology are preferred; experience with Mathematica is desirable. Position level and salary will depend on education and experience.
Instructions: To apply, send (1) a cover letter describing your interests, skills, and prior research experience, including any specific experience with the job responsibilities listed above; (2) a curriculum vitae; (3) copies of your transcripts from undergraduate or graduate work (unofficial copies are acceptable); and (4) the names and contact numbers of three persons who can be contacted for letters of reference, at least one of whom must have acted as your supervisor in a previous research position. Position 2: Type: RESEARCH
Position: POSTDOCTORAL SCIENTIST, Full-Time, Exempt
Description: The MBL has an immediate opening for a full-time, year-round Postdoctoral Scientist position, as part of an NIH-funded project led by MBL Director and CEO Gary Borisy to develop novel technology for analyzing complex oral microbial communities. This is an exciting and fast-paced project in fundamental technique development with broad application in biology.
Duties: Work as part of an interdisciplinary team to develop and apply techniques for simultaneous imaging of tens to hundreds of microbial taxa in samples from the human mouth, using fluorescent probes targeted to ribosomal RNA and other nucleic acids. Responsibilities include protocol development, in situ hybridization, spectral imaging microscopy with confocal and wide-field fluorescence microscopes, and data analysis using Mathematica and other platforms.
Conditions: (no unusual working conditions)
Education: SKILLS/EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE: Applicants must hold a Ph.D. in molecular biology or a related field and have a strong record of scientific publication. Experience with microbiology and microscopy are highly desirable. Experience with Mathematica is helpful.
Instructions: To apply, send a cover letter, curriculum vitae, and the names and contact numbers of three persons who can be contacted for letters of reference to: Marine Biological Laboratory, ATTN: Human Resources reference code [ ], 7 MBL Street, Woods Hole, MA 02543; email: [hidden email] An Equal Opportunity Affirmative Action Employer / Non-smoking workplace.
Deadline: Until a suitable candidate is identified.
