Vibration Isolation

Hi,

We are planning to build a single molecule based super resolution system. I
plan to put only a microscope on my active vibration isolation table. The
weight of the optical components (including microscope)and accessories on
the table would not exceed more than 100 Kg.

Is it necessary to go for 6-8 inch thick breadboard for the active
vibration isolation platfrom or an active vibration table with 4 inch
breadboard be fine for the job?

When I compare the graphs of the performance for the most of the active air
based optical isolation platforms with breadboards (whether 4 inch or 8
inch)  and with anti vibration frame  (cast or independent legs) perform
well within the standard range ?

Is there any specific rules for selecting active antivibration platforms ?

Any input will be appreciated.

Consider: How noisy is the environment? Are you in a basement or an upper
floor of a building? Is there a road with bus or truck traffic nearby? Are
there fridges or freezers or other vibration-causing equipment in the next
room?
A thicker table tends to damp out lower frequency vibrational noise, so if
you have lower frequency noise in the environment then a thicker table
would be better. A thicker and heavier table also tends to be more stable
if it is bumped or leaned on by a user, so overall thicker is better.
My own lab is on a second floors, near a major highway with truck traffic,
with a room full of -80C freezers down the hall with lots of compressors
rattling away. I went with huge active-leveling air floated 18" thick
tables and have had no issues with my confocals and two-photons re
vibration.

If you want to be more rigorous, ask your engineering or physics department if they have a sensitive, calibrated accelerometer and a spectrum analyzer.  Place the accelerometer on the floor throughout the room you want to place the equipment, and hook it up to the spectrum analyzer.  This way you will know exactly the frequencies you need to damp out.

You might get a kick out of this.
In the 70’s I was servicing for a Zeiss dealer.
I was called to a hospital in Washington DC, ( of course), because their new ceiling mounted surgical Eye Scope became blurry.  
I went in and checked it out to find that when they installed their new air-conditioning compressor they installed it adjacent the mounting for the microscope!

True story!
