The Faculty of Science<https://www.uts.edu.au/about/faculty-science> is seeking a person with outstanding talent for the position of Director of its Microbial Imaging Facility, a core high-end optical imaging facility. The position requires an advanced knowledge of, and expertise in, state-of-the-art optical imaging, including super-resolution, to ensure that this Facility continues to contribute to UTS’ research impact, and maintains and builds further our national leadership and international recognition in this field. The role will provide academic research leadership, as well as influence the strategic direction of research in optical imaging, including the introduction and training in new technologies to our suite of instruments.

The purpose of the role

As the Director, you will manage this Facility to build an outstanding national and international reputation for world leading optical imaging in biological sciences. You will ensure effective operation and research support of microscopy services to a range of users of this Facility. The position will involve industry engagement including contributing to the show-site partnership with GE Healthcare and securing funding support for equipment and infrastructure to drive the ongoing development and growth of the facility.

Your responsibility will also be to enable excellent research across the university, provide quality research supervision for Higher Degree Postgraduate and Honours students, and contribute to the University’s research culture and development through engaging and collaborating in cross-centre and cross-faculty dialogue and initiatives.

About the Faculty of Science

This role is within the Faculty of Science to support scientists conducting biological (mainly biomedical and environmental science) research within the Faculty’s ithree institute (Infection, Immunity and Innovation), the Climate Change Cluster (C3), The Institute for Biomedical Materials & Devices (IBMD), the School of Life Sciences (SoLS), and the School of Mathematical and Physical Sciences (MaPS).

Science is one of the largest faculties at UTS, which is ranked Australia’s top young university, with a particular focus on research translation.

To be successful in securing this role you will have:

  *   a PhD in Biological Sciences, Biomedical Engineering, Medical Sciences, Computational Biology, Biophysics, Physics, or equivalent
  *   recent experience with managing a core optical imaging facility
  *   advanced knowledge of super-resolution microscopy techniques including 3D structured illumination and single molecule localisation techniques
  *   advanced knowledge of image analysis programs such as ImageJ and Imaris
  *   advanced knowledge of optical imaging techniques including wide-field fluorescence, deconvolution and confocal microscopy of fixed and live samples
  *   proven ability to develop, manage and supervise training for researchers using optical imaging to enable excellent research outputs
  *   proven track record in research excellence and high quality outputs
  *   excellent oral and written communication skills

Remuneration & Benefits

Base Salary Range: $121,469 to $155,915 pa (Level C/D)

This role attracts 17% superannuation in addition to the base salary. Employee benefits include flexible work practices, childcare centres, generous parental leave and salary packaging opportunities.

This position is full-time and appointment will be made on a continuing basis.
