Dear Colleagues,

We will do FISH with sperm cells from HIV + patients. Before I do FISH, I
will check my slides under microscope. Would anybody tell me how to
disinfect microscopes? Any other tips as well?
Thanks.

Hi Yuwei Zhang,
When this situation ever comes up, I recommend doing everything you can possibly do to avoid contaminating the microscope in the first place. By this I would consider the following:
1. Seal your FISH labelled samples on the slide under a coverslip (perhaps using nail polish),
2. Decontaminate all surfaces of the slides (after the jail polish has set). Use whatever is process is recommended for ensuring adequate decontamination (but not UV exposure)
3. Prevent contamination of the slide in the first place by handling it correctly (ie make sure material is not transferred onto other parts of the slide by transfer from your gloves etc).

As a general comment, you do not want to be in a position where your microscope might need to be decontaminated.
Cheers
Paul
