This seems worth keeping an eye on:

hotography-using-modulo-camera

In the new design a full pixel well just empties out and starts over from
zero, like an odometer, and a tally counter registers how many times each
pixel turned over.  In a scientific detector this seems like it could
offer basically infinite bit depth.  Instant HDR for artists could also
mean sensitive measurement of very dim and very-very bright things in one
image for researchers.

No commercial interest or personal connection, as with the back-thinned
CMOS chip in the SONY A7-RII it just seems like a potentially useful
development.

Best,
