"Not exactly" - because I do not expect anyone on this List to buy a middle-school grade $300 microscope. It shows live cells in special type of contrast that quantitatively reflects cell thickness and, additionally, hides dead cells and all kinds of dirt.

Slides can be obtained from Nasco, Bioptechs (no personal interest in slides sales) or just use regular slides.

Transmission-through-dye (TTD) is a technique developed at Kent State University that is complementary to bright-field microscopy. It works by adding a nontoxic blue dye to a sample and shining a red light on it at a wavelength that is strongly absorbed by the dye.
