Doing microscope repair, we often get lenses, many not even on inverted
microscopes, with oil inside and/or on the back of lenses. I did want to let people
know that many of the lenses actually CAN be taken apart, cleaned and returned
to service. It does take experience and there is never a guarantee that the lens will
come apart smoothly. We probably have a greater than 90% track record of
success fixing these lenses. Also many manufacturers will repair lenses, but fairly
costly.
If you do have a bad lens with oil in it, don't just throw out $1000 of glass, it
might be repairable!
