The Single Cell Facility (SCF) is a newly established scientific core facility within the ETH Department of Biosystems Science and Engineering (D-BSSE), located in Basel. The SCF serves its users by providing technology and support in flow cytometry and various types of automated microscopy. The SCF will be staffed with five people, two of whom are dedicated to microscopy, two to flow cytometry and one to image analysis and data management.
We are looking for an experienced individual interested in a diverse and innovative work environment to strengthen the SCF as a:

Microscopy Engineer

The successful candidate will hold a degree from a technical college or a university with strong background and a proven track record in bio-photonics/optical engineering related to light microscopy and digital imaging.
She/he will have extensive technical experience with state-of-the-art light microscopy platforms for confocal and live-cell imaging. Strong knowledge of advanced quantitative imaging technologies as well as of their underlying
principles are required. The candidate should have hands-on skills in microscopy component integration and a working knowledge in scripting and programming.


Responsibilities include instrument quality control, maintenance and training and support of facility users. The microscopy engineer will develop and implement customized configurations. Further tasks are scripting and/or programming of automated imaging systems. He/she will work in close collaboration with our software engineer in the area of microscope hardware control and data analysis and/or data management.

This position demands very good communication skills (in English) to interact with scientists and students, and the skill to adapt to the service character of the facility to successfully support scientific research and operations at the D‑BSSE. Besides having excellent technical abilities in the field of light microscopy, the candidate must be an excellent team player and possess the ability to work in a variety of scientific areas.
