quantum dots with surface charges

dear listers:
when quantum dots appeared I remember hearing a talk from the original
company, and in their portfolio there would QD's with strong negative
and positive charges, to allow different coatings. We are now
considering options for these coatings, but I cannot track specifically
th einfo regarding the different surface charges. This occurred some
time ago, and I may be mixing up things, but if anyone has any hint,
advise, or experience, I would be most grateful.

Kind regards
Jose

Hello Listers and Dr. Feijo,

Molecular Probes (where the original Quantum Dot corporation moved to) offers Qdot® nanocrystals with both carboxyl- and amine-surfaces to accommodate a variety of bioconjugation approaches.  The carboxyl functionalized particles tend to be non-specifically "sticky" in biological system and so appropriate precautions should be taken when working with or further functionalizing these particles.  The amine surface, however, is passivated with a PEG layer that eliminates "stickiness" in biological systems.

Kind Regards

Mike
