I too would recommend the Lichtman paper. I'm also a big fan of David Wolf's chapter on fluorescence in the book Digital Microscopy (3rd) edition. If your university has access to Elsevier Science Direct, you should be able to download this chapter:
And in the newer book by Clegg and Periasamy, FLIM Microscopy in Biology and Medicine, there is an excellent introductory chapter on fluorescence concepts as they relate to microscopy. This chapter also does a really good job of explaining the fluorescence lifetime and how this can be used for imaging.
