I have an Andor 897 on a system in my core facility.
The system (computer) is on 10-12hrs a day coming up on 3yrs and I haven't had
any fan/cooling issues.
We shut down the system at night and I have taught users to shut down the
computer.
(also had Andor EMCCDs in past labs and they worked well)
For hotswaping:
My understanding is the computer can be on, but the software controlling the
camera needs to be off.
But perhaps we should get confirmation from an Andor rep.

Hello All,
We are in the process of purchasing a EMCCD camera
for our microscope to look at very low levels of fluorescence. In this
context, we evaluated the following cameras
1. Photometrics Evolve 512
2. Andor iXon X3 DU897.
Both of them performed similarly though the Andor had less background
noise. However, the Andor does not have an on/off switch and the fan
stays on unless we shut down the computer. So the question to all the
folks who have used Andor before is that have you had issues with this
kind of system.
Any feedback will be great for us to make a decision.
Thanks,
-Prabhakar
