I heard back from Andor at their USA Connecticut Office:
"As long as the software is not grabbing control of the camera, you can remove
the white cable from the camera or the PC. When the power from the PCI bus is
no longer getting to the camera, the fan will not run. Of course, if you plan
to use the computer without the camera, it is best practice to disconnect it
before starting but if you need to disconnect while the PC power is on, it will
not damage the hardware. If you try to disconnect while Andor iQ software is
controlling the camera, it can cause errors so do take due caution not to do
this.
In addition, we have designed our newer PCI-Express CCI-24 card to turn the fan
off when the camera is not in use and the acquisition software is exited, even
if the PC is on.

Prabhakar, perhaps you can request this new PCI-express card at purchase -

Hello All,
We are in the process of purchasing a EMCCD camera
for our microscope to look at very low levels of fluorescence. In this
context, we evaluated the following cameras
1. Photometrics Evolve 512
2. Andor iXon X3 DU897.
Both of them performed similarly though the Andor had less background
noise. However, the Andor does not have an on/off switch and the fan
stays on unless we shut down the computer. So the question to all the
folks who have used Andor before is that have you had issues with this
kind of system.
Any feedback will be great for us to make a decision.
Thanks,
-Prabhakar
