The ImageJ listserv requires a web based confirmation to submit to the list.  It can be a bit annoying, but it would eliminate issues like this.

I believe it's outlook that has a 'only send one out of office reply to each sender' option.

At least Ben will be back today. We should all ask him how his course went.
