I've definitely had switches and switch encoders fail in the past, and they
often seem to be the weak point (if you look up the specs a lot of them
have a pretty limited cycle rating).  The easiest thing to do would be to
power down the device and let it sit for a bit (for the caps to discharge),
and then using a multimeter measure the resistivity between the two wire
contacts with the switch open and closed.  Also, jostle the key a bit and
see if this modulates the resistivity.  If the switch needs to be replaced,
then replacing the part should be pretty trivial.  At best, Digikey or
Mouser have the exact same part in stock.  if not, just get a similar
diameter key switch that has the same NO/NC configuration as the current
switch.
