For a DMD I would definitely recommend using an LED over a laser. Lasers
result in some pretty nasty speckle on the image plane, and also cause a
sort of blazing effect on the DMD, resulting in the illumination on the
image plane being quite non-uniform. You can also get a 1W 405 nm LED for
pretty cheap:

much less than a laser:
