Hi everyone

Nice discussion. So if I summarize what is needed:
- good UPS with batteries regularly checked and replaced when needed
- back up power from a diesel generator that takes a short while to take over (basically it is not enough to have the back up power without UPS)
- someone on call who can come before the generator has had enough

This is exactly the conclusion we came to when designing our new building.
But all this is necessary only if there are power cuts several times per year.
If the power cuts come seldom and there is a good surge protection system, there is no need for these expenses. This is of course to be balanced with the cost (and number) of the wasted experiments.

Since we have less than one power cut per year, we have skipped UPS, backup power and on call person and focussed on the surge system.

Med vänlig hälsning / Best regards

Sylvie

Hi Mario,
I prefer "online" (or double conversion) style UPS.
One 2P system I used to work with was backed up by a massive 6 kW GE Digital Energy UPS (maybe an overkill, but there was an Ar-ion laser as part of the system). Some smaller GE Digital Energy units (1 - 2 kW) were also sold as Franek. Very robust, but rather old.
We also use GE VH-series units on some smaller equipment, like plate readers and liquid chromatography systems. I now only have one microscope backed up, it's a spinning disk confocal (no Ar-ion laser), and the UPS is APC SURTA2200 (it's the "RT" series, that means "online"). I got it for
$200 and I'm happy with it.
Of note is that the microscope is connected to emergency power, and there are more outages on emergency power than on regular outlets (once or twice a year to test the generator and switches, cca 15 second outage to crank up the diesel engine). So for any computerized equipment connected to the emergency power a UPS is a must!
Best, zdenek
