I've just tried to buy a small (75cm x 90cm) active anti-vibration table from Thorlabs.
Unexpectedly they just informed me that they can't ship with FOB terms to our customs
agent at the border, but have to either ship internationally direct or charge sales tax (we
legally cannot pay point-of-origin taxes on imported items). If they shipped to our
customs agent, freight charges would be 8% of purchase price. Direct international
shipping is 40% of purchase price. There is no local distributer.

Putting aside the fact that I'm astonished an established company like Thorlabs aren't able
to ship on FOB terms, does anybody have a suggestion for an alternative supplier of
active anti-vibration tables of similar dimensions based in the US or Canada?

Many thanks,

Chris Wood

Hi Chris,

I have been very satisfied with my TMC (Technical Manufacturing Corp) anti-vibration table.  They are located in Peabody, Massachusetts. Main telephone# (978)532-6330.

I would suggest the most flexible and least expensive solution is to stay
away from the primary vendors and go to the secondary market.  The best
source for active vibration isolation tables at low cost is www.BMIUS.com.
Bob Brahms is a great resource (he owns the company), they have a huge
variety and the prices are way cheaper than new..

OK this is a bit low-tech but I have noticed a huge reduction in noise with our laser tweezers. If you take a heavy table, an optical breadboard would be perfect, just lay a series of motor-scooter inner tubes underneath and this will provide excellent passive damping.

Cheers

Hello Chris,

Under INCOTERMS, the FOB designation only applies to transport by sea.
We can ship by Ex Works (EXW), which should offer you the service you
need. Your customs agent should be able to provide paperwork that would
allow the transaction to occur without sales tax.

I am sorry that Thorlabs wasn't able to make the order process smooth for
you. If you are still interested in trying to work with us please contact me
and I am confident we can cut through the red tape.

Thanks,

Tyler Morgus
