To join, leave or search the confocal microscopy listserv, go to: http://lists.umn.edu/cgi-bin/wa?A0=confocalmicroscopy ***** W are planning a new floor for our microscopy core, and going over the blueprints the architect asked whether we can put the internt/LAN switch communication tower (if that's what it's called - see link to pic below) for the entire wing next to one of the confocals (FV1000). So the confocal will sit in it's own small room and just off that room, would be a space about 4x6 feet for the tower (itself about 7 feet high). Does this sound like a bad idea? It does, I know. But I tried to think of a reason not too; it does not create a lot of heat (low voltage - but a lot of it). Does not seem to vibrate to much judging by some other ones I checked. Does anyone have similar physical proximity to such an installation and does not have any problems? Is there another problem with this I did not think of? I would not ask if we had a lot of extra room to place this thing. https://drive.google.com/file/d/0B9t184FKmx04bjVfczJ3Q0xnTWs/edit?usp=sharing Thanks, Avi -- |

The schedule of adding a new jack or updating firmware may have priority over a confocal user. If this communications system doesn’t have a separate entrance I could see conflicts arising. Some appropriate metal mesh in the walls should do, or they might be able to build a smaller box around the rack or shield the rack itself. To join, leave or search the confocal microscopy listserv, go to: http://lists.umn.edu/cgi-bin/wa?A0=confocalmicroscopy ***** We have one of these just outside our confocal room. We were just told, not given any choice. Since installation 3 years ago, it has been visited about 3 times by IT people modifying connections. It generates almost no noise or heat and we haven't detected any extra EM noise. So it shouldn't be much of a problem. There must be other ones around that you could check out to make sure? cheers, Rosemary Dr Rosemary White CSIRO Plant Industry GPO Box 1600 Canberra, ACT 2601 Australia T 61 2 6246 5475 F 61 2 6246 5334 E [hidden email] On 18/12/13 5:58 AM, "Craig Brideau" <[hidden email]> wrote: >***** >To join, leave or search the confocal microscopy listserv, go to: >http://lists.umn.edu/cgi-bin/wa?A0=confocalmicroscopy >***** > >I agree, the separate entrance would be a must, and if they absolutely >have >to put it there, I would make them shield the room with a faraday cage. >Some appropriate metal mesh in the walls should do, or they might be able >to build a smaller box around the rack or shield the rack itself. > >Craig > > > >On Tue, Dec 17, 2013 at 7:52 AM, Mark Sanders <[hidden email]> wrote: > >> ***** >> To join, leave or search the confocal microscopy listserv, go to: >> http://lists.umn.edu/cgi-bin/wa?A0=confocalmicroscopy >> ***** >> >> Hi Avi, >> >> In addition to the heat load and EM noise that would be generated, my >>main >> concern would be the IT personnel traffic that comes with the care and >> feeding of the communications network. Is I.T. willing to buy you one? (and is it practical to move the scope into it?) even if they claim no radio frequency interference, don't believe them.
