Dear List,
Our Institute is evaluating the pros and cons of Electronic Lab Notebooks
(ELNs) with a view to adopting an ELN solution if something appropriate
can be found.  I'm interesting in hearing about the positive and negative
experiences of others (particularly within academic institutions - surely
some of you have ELNs??) where ELNs have been implemented.   Are you
now an ELN evangelist, or have you been given an ELN and found it is
clearly not fit for purpose?  Are there any ELNs that offer specific
advantages for imaging data?
All comments relating to ELNs in general and their potential for use with
imaging data/imaging applications greatly appreciated!
Many thanks,
Simon

Hi Simon et alii

please have a look at this

http://www.sciencemag.org/site/products/lst_20140725.xhtml

....my opinion is that no 2 installations are the same and even within the same institute no 2 labs are the same, ie,  a very generic approach is needed for basic research. In the so called translational research it makes more sense to me but towards LIMS...and don't forget digital signatures for legal proposes.

What we are trying to setup is just funcional, a "bag" (or spheres in the software) with typified very basic info that can have links and attached files (tagging is extremely important here for searching proposes). This is now working in our booking system so that you can, apart to share generic data with your institute, group members, PIs ou just private, link data to a specific booking slots and track all equipment details (if configured). Can also be used without the booking, of course. Regarding images what we do is to store them in a central repository but since you can upload them with sFTP straight from the booking software, you keep traceability...just testing now with 10Gb network :P

email me offlist for further details.

Hi Simon,
A few years ago, we looked into some of the centrally managed big ELN solutions. All of the ELN we evaluated where too rigid for a basic research institute like ours. None of them could handle scientific images.
Now, everyone can choose to have a paper or electronic solution as lab notebook. We archive copies of the lab notebooks on a monthly basis. For electronic solutions, we have the following policy in place:
"Electronic data constituting a laboratory notebook must be accessible to the lab's administrative assistant and must be in one or more of the following formats to be accepted by the system: PowerPoint (.PPT), Microsoft Word (.DOC), Adobe Acrobat (.PDF), Excel (.XLS) or an Image (.JPG)."

Most in my group and I are now using Evernote. We convert the most recent entries on a regular basis into a pdf and submit it for archiving. This solution is very flexible and works very well for us. I use the iPad to compose hand written notes or to take photos of paper entries or white board discussions. To organize our microscope data we are moving towards OMERO.
