We have a 2008 model Axioimager, coupled to an LSM5 exciter, used mainly for polarization studies on liquid crystals. Recently, the Zen software failed to launch with "fail to connect to RTC..." message. Resetting did not work. On the monitor, however, 'Real time connection connected..' message appears. It is suspected that the IDE, transcend 128 MB flash module, used to boot may have been corrupted. If a new IDE flash module  is purchased, the program data will have to be written into it. Is there a way of getting the data? Since the model is out of service, local Zeiss rep has expressed inability to extend technical support. It seems such a pity that for the sake of the IDE, the instrument should remain defunct.  We would be indebted for any suggestions to bring the confocal onroad.

Dear Krishnamurthy,

I don't know if all the RTC PCs have the same operative system (our
machine is a LSM7DUO). If so, I can make a copy of our flash drive and
send you the compressed files, so you can rebuild your system again.

On the other hand, thank you for remembering this black box computer
needs also an HD backup.

Best regards.

Good morning,

I don't know if this will help but writing to you just in case the problem is less serious than you think.

We have a Zeiss LSM 710. After we moved to Windows 7 some years ago, we had to change the order in which we turned things on. If we turn on the RTC before the PC, we get the same error. Using the Reset button doesn't work, we just have to turn off the RTC, exit ZEN, restart the RTC and wait for the start up sounds  Then restart ZEN and all is OK.

We changed our practice to turning on the RTC after the PC is on and after we have logged on. This solved the problem.

Also our system has a back up copy of the system on a USB that is stored inside the PC. I think this is standard for Zeiss so you should also have this.

Kind regards,

Jacqui

In case it helps, I was just having RTC connection issues on an LSM 710 and
it turns out the RTC was not booting up correctly for lack of a keyboard
(we think BIOS was reset). Connecting a PS/2 keyboard to the back of the
RTC fixed the issue while Zeiss resets the BIOS and replaces the
motherboard battery.

Hi , Maybe it had been mentionned before:

1- change the battery of the motiver Board, reprogram the Bios , resynchronise the Clock, date between the RTC and the PC

2- check the connection to the motherboard

Good luck

Louis

You can also connect a monitor to the RTC to see what it’s doing and if it
gives a clue to what to try.

That looks like some sort of drive failure. BLK_DEV is basically the
description of the hardware and how to use it, so if you can't initiate it
then the hardware might not be responding to the bootloader/BIOS.

There won't be many VxWorks experts around here... But yes, this looks like
a corrupted drive.
It could also be BIOS configuration, I would definitely try to toggle
between IDE and AHCI settings in BIOS (provided the drive is connected
through SATA).
Another thought: Zeiss might have an easy way to recover the RT computer,
maybe TFTP/BOOTP, but this will be hard to figure out without Zeiss' help.
Good luck!

We have gone through a number of RTCs on our Zeiss 710.  For a while in the mid-2010s we kept a screen and keyboard hooked up to it for coddling through a rough patch.  However,  swapping it out for a replacement from Zeiss was the last move a few years ago and this has been the most stable solution.

Hi, we had this problem on our 510 some years back when I was working in
Norway. I posted the solution on the confocal list then. Here is the link:

have you tried changing the motherboard battery?
we had similar issue a few years ago and that was the problem
