All:

I am looking for a way to fluorescently counter-stain the volume of cultured
cells, with a result similar to what would be achieved by having them
express GFP in the cytoplasm. I have seen some references to staining with
eosin Y. Does anyone have other suggestions?

Thanks in advance.

Invitrogen's Live/Dead assay includes calcein, a dye that is only taken up by live cells and it only becomes fluorescent when it is exposed to cytoplasmic esterases.  It's a green dye and I am pretty sure that you can purchase it separately and not just as part of the kit.

Invitrogen: CellTracer (several colors to choose from).
