Dear Listers,

I've had the good fortune to have been given an old(ish) Perkin Elmer Ultraview Spinning disk system. Having re-assembled it I'm pleased to find it is in full working order, but I have one possible problem. The images detected on the Hamamatsu EMCCD C9100 are missing the top and bottom. I have no documentation with the system so don't know if this is normal. Image here: http://imgur.com/scW5p5H
I've had a scan through the listserv archives and read that the output from the Yokogawa disk isn't square. Have I got a problem with the system, or should I just crop the camera acquisition area?
cheers

Dear Dale,

The CSU-22 was designed for use with a rectangular shape CCD (such as the Sony Interline).  Your EMCCD sensor is square.  The shorter vertical aspect of the CSU-22 output is therefore not filling your EMCCD sensor.  You have two options to my knowledge

1. crop, as you suggested
2. see if you can add somewhere around a 1.2x magnification adapter between the CSU-22 and the camera.

Option 2 will be challenging commercially as the CSU-22 is now obsolete, and PE no longer make the UltraView.

Kind regards

Geraint

Dale,

there is a rectangular field stop inside the CSU22 in order to stop scattered light from reaching the cameraas far as I recall, which can be removed or swapped for a square field stop.
Alternatively, you can magnify the image using a suitable camera c-mount. The overall magnification affects your pinhole diameter, but if you combine a 60x objective with a 1,6x camera mount, that should help.

My 2 cents,
Good luck,
Jens

Thanks for the replies, both here and off list. I'll stick to cropping the sensor area for now, and give some thought to putting in a magnifying camera mount. Mostly just relieved that the rectangular output is as it should be!
cheers
