Dear all--

I've just spent an hour+ trying to track down a copy of a translation of
Köhler's 1893 paper on what we now call Köhler illumination.  Murphy and
Davidson's "Fundamentals of Light Microscopy and Digital Imaging" cite
it, and Google Scholar shows it as follows:

Köhler illumination centenary: a collection of papers detailing Köhler
illumination
PJ Evennett - Royal Microscopical Society, 1994

I've checked the RMS site, I've searched our library catalog, I've
searched using Google, and found nothing.  The book or article appears
not to exist, but I expect that it's just fallen through a digital crack.

Can anyone out there help me with a more complete citation or a link?

Thanks--

Martin Wessendorf

Hi Martin,
You want the translation to English, right?

https://micro.magnet.fsu.edu/primer/anatomy/kohleroriginal.html

At the bottom it states:

This translation of Dr. Köhler's original paper, which appeared along with one "woodcut" (Figure 1) in Zeitschrift für wissenschaftl. Mikroskopie, 10: pages 433-440 (1893), was first published in "Köhler Illumination Centenary" by the Royal Microscopical Society in 1994.
Cheers,

Hi Martin,

Zeiss sponsored the 1994 Centenary collection (mine print was discarded
many moves ago) - hopefully someone at Zeiss US or Germany HQ still has
it (ex. their archives) and they/RMS can get it scanned to PDF. For that
matter, you could ask the RMS to get you in contact with Peter E.

this is why I look in wikipedia: there is also a J RMS article in 1894

Phomicrographical Purposes". Journal of the Royal Microscopical Society.

Which should be in the Microscopy (pages 250-281) at

By Peter E, do you mean Peter Evenett?

I have contact details for him, if you want to contact me off list.

THANK YOU to Kyle and everyone else who responded. I hope to have the
students in my microscopy course use the paper, and it looks as if the
text of the translation is available on-line as html, using the link
that Kyle posted.

I appreciate the help!!

Martin

I've tried to track down articles from that era on Google books with pretty
good success.  Since most of the scanning is automated, sometimes there can
be a mistake in the conversion from print text to digital text.  Therefore,
seeing if you can find that volume in Google books, or other volumes close
to it in time will help narrow down how the find the article you are
looking for.  Unfortunately, sometimes it requires guessing what the
accidental autocorrect, which can be fairly challenging for those of us who
are not fluent in German.

Once you find it, Google translate does a spectacular job at translating,
since there are a LOT of cognates between German and English, especially
when you get into scientific jargon.

Good luck,
   Ben Smith
