MP Laser Maintenance

Dear All

I m somewhat puzzled by extended warranties for IR laser maintenance. While Coherent clearly states conditions in its webpage, I fail to see it with Spectraphysics.

What if a laser is several years old, and the laser maintenance contract says (it even avoids the word extended warranty) laser module can only be exchanged free of charge due to a manufacturing defect.

Is it a manufacturing defect when a laser expires its mojo after several years? Or dare I call it age? What if it has been maintained from original warranty expiration (a year) until now, and now a new maintenance is due?

In other words, can I trust Spectraphysics to replace a several old laser module for free if its maintenance contract states it only can be exchanged for free due to a manufacturing defect?

Thanks

Best Regards

<base href="x-msg://38/">Dear Axel,

For what it's worth, while I helped oversee UCI's Optical Biology Core Facility we had superb after sale service from SP.  I found them to stand behind their product and to provide prompt support on the rare occasions that our Mai-Tai required service.  This included replacement of major core components of the laser over the five years I helped oversee the facility.

Sincerely,

Grant MacGregor

Hi Axel

We have our Maitai in the Seattle, WA area and it has been on service
contract since installation in late 2000.  The service has been excellent
and parts when failed were replaced promptly e.g., a couple pump lasers,
and multiple units of the water chiller.  Service level have not changed
much since SpectraPhysics became Newport.

We have recently gone down to a parts-only contract and have not needed a
service yet.  The level of service most lkely depends on the service
engineer and I am very satisfy with ours.

Enjoy the fabulous food in Singapore!
