I’m being asked by a third party contractor about our microscope air tables.

Do people have their air tables tested and or calibrated once per year?

Sincerely,

Claire

No--we don't.  If it's still suspended, it's o.k.  We do adjust the
levelers as needed.

We never do. As long as the tables are floating on all legs (tested by pressing slightly on each corner of the table), we are happy.

As has been indicated, checking for normal operation is always a good idea. Another good idea is checking for vibrations not due to the table on an annual basis. Fans, buildings, cabling all evolve and can induce vibration that can impact the imaging in spite of a functioning table.

Cheers,
Mark

I would add that different level of vibration dampening may be required
depending on imaging application and especially

pixel resolution . I am now building a custom STED system and wonder how
much more dampening will be required. Regarding
regular confocal and widefield systems I second what other people told
- as long as table is floating and leveled no further tests

are usually needed.

Hi everyone

We have antivibration tables and have had no problem so far in our old building. We moved one year ago to a more bling bling building with fantastic ventilation. The ventilation vents and pipes that are above us in the ceiling can create some regular background noise at times. The sound waves nicely push on the antivibration tables the way I would do if I wanted to test the tables. Our STORM and our cell picker system vibrate in unison... How cool is that?

Therefore when building a room, I would in retrospect also check if what is hidden under the ceiling can be noisy. :(

Med vänlig hälsning / Best regards

Sylvie

The only caveat to this would be that if it is powered by a compressor, the pressure vessel of the compressor would likely be subject to a regular statutory inspection / testing (as is in workplace) and if powered from a compressed air cylinder, those also have a regular statutory inspection cycle (in the UK diving air cylinders have a 2.5 year cycle of visual internal inspection and a 5 year hydraulic testing). I guess that most cylinders in the air table scenario just sit there for many years without a thought as to their internal condition.
