It occurred to me that rather than just compiling a few anecdotal examples, it might be helpful if a more formal survey and analysis was done and made available through the web for as many microscopy facilities as possible. I have put together a microscopy metrics survey with a 3rd party vendor who will be kind enough to acquire, analyze and create a full report of the compiled data. Questions like equipment type, cost recovery, institutional support levels, sources of equipment funding and advanced techniques specific to microscopy center are asked. I anticipate this process and the questions will evolve in future surveys as we get feedback, but I am hoping if you manage/direct a microscopy facility that you would take about 5-10 minutes to complete the survey. Any financial numbers could be reasonable estimations if you are willing to share. Of course and suggestions/improvements are welcome and you can email me directly or do it through the survey. A full report will be available in a few months but feel free to ask sooner if you need it. If you are willing to participate please go to the following link and click on the gray "Metrics on Microscopy Facilities" button on the right hand side of the home-page: http://www.ideaelan.com/public/index.aspx Disclaimer. To join, leave or search the confocal microscopy listserv, go to: http://lists.umn.edu/cgi-bin/wa?A0=confocalmicroscopy ***** Dear Kirk, the survey is a good idea, could be useful, but a few things could be improved: generally: to make it useful internationally (which without doubt it could be), the country of the facility should be added somewhere; most microscopes come from a few leading suppliers across the world, so equipment and service costs should be similar - if not, it would be interesting to find out, and why #27: personal details, followed by the statement that "All of this information will be made available to everyone". Not all institutions will want their internal charges made public in a non-anonymised form. Good luck, and thanks for organising it, Martin ================================ Martin Spitaler, PhD FILM - Facility for Imaging by Light Microscopy - Facility Manager - Sir Alexander Fleming Building, desk 401 Imperial College London / South Kensington Exhibition Road London SW7 2AZ UK Tel. +44-(0)20-759-42023 E-mail [hidden email] Website: http://imperial.ac.uk/imagingfacility |

To join, leave or search the confocal microscopy listserv, go to: http://lists.umn.edu/cgi-bin/wa?A0=confocalmicroscopy ***** Hi Geroge and All, Thanks, George. Yes I am aware of this survey and few others directed at Core Facilities in general and certainly microscopy facilities were included. In fact about 1/2 of the 36 included respondants ran EM facilities. I recommend that others read this as well as there is much useful information and a great resource. However, after attempting to use a similar broad survey internally with 10 cores at my institution, I can only get so far with this information for my own center and the others as well. Our other cores, covering the gamut of technologies and services, have greatly varying business models. While the survey I requested my colleagues participate in has some fundamental overlapping questions with other surveys, it has many questions that are highly specific to microscopy that are never included in a broader non-microscopy specific survey. Further, some overlap was intended as this will allow us to compare how microscopy facilities compare to cores in general. I am hoping we get over 100 respondents (more if possible) specific to microscopy. When I walk into my administration with the results, I want to be able to parse out the details specifically with cores more like mine. I think this distinction matters when I want to show what percentage of cores have or plan to add super-resolution microscopy to their centers, for example. I think a survey like this should also be held periodically so we can watch the changes of microscopy centers as they evolve with time and as I mentioned before I would welcome feedback on improving the questions in future iterations. George, you bring up a good point about the other survey and we will be sure to include this citation and others related to microscopy facilities, microscopy salaries with the report. To join, leave or search the confocal microscopy listserv, go to: http://lists.umn.edu/cgi-bin/wa?A0=confocalmicroscopy ***** Dear Martin, Excellent points. We wanted to provide the survey to be anonymous (as possible considering it is through the internet) to get as many facilities as possible to participate. Anyone completing the document can voluntarily provide personal information only if they want to receive an email when results are ready or to be considered for the iPAD3 from the group of respondents (see survey link: http://www.ideaelan.com/public/index.aspx). I will send an email to the listserv when they are ready, anyway. Any personal information or specific institutions partipating will NOT be included in any reports. I hope this clarifies and my apologies for the confusion. I think a future version will include country of origin, directly. I will check to see if the survey itself can determine the country of origin and if possible, will break this down in final analysis. I recognize the business models can vary differently internationally and your point is well taken. We will brainstorm on how to sort out variation in costs of service/instrument by country for a future version. Again, thanks for the important feedback. To join, leave or search the confocal microscopy listserv, go to: http://lists.umn.edu/cgi-bin/wa?A0=confocalmicroscopy ***** Hi Kirk, At the recent ABRF annual meeting in Orlando there was an organizing session for what may become two regional chapters: Mid-Atlantic (i.e. you) and Southeast (multiple individuals from U Florida, U Miami, MD Anderson Cancer Center in Houston, and more). The chapters and affiliates web page is http://www.abrf.org/index.cfm/page/home/affiliates_chapters.htm ... there is one international chapter (India). At a University - or even just considering a medical school (most of UM's research funding are at the med school) - there should not be a wide variety of "business models". The ABRF web site - and various articles in its house journal - have contacts and resources for aligning the core's. Best wishes, George On 4/13/2012 4:58 AM, Kirk Czymmek wrote: > ***** > To join, leave or search the confocal microscopy listserv, go to: > http://lists.umn.edu/cgi-bin/wa?A0=confocalmicroscopy > ***** > > Hi Geroge and All, > > Thanks, George.
