We had some early discussions with them but were shocked by the cost: they indicated pricing along the lines of $100K-150K for 10 markers on 10-20 slides. Too expensive by far so we didn't proceed. We're not going to miss the extra laser lines, but need the 488nm. Furthermore, what suggestions are there for the old laser head? We really do not need it cluttering up the lab. Simplistic I know, but we need to keep that FluoView 500 ticking along and this is beyond me. Thanks. Christian |

We actually make use of the 514 and 457 lines fairly regularly. Replacing the argon with three diode lasers was pretty cost prohibitive, and it turns out that having our old argons refurbished only cost around $5k. I went with these guys: http://www.modu-laser.com/ They have refurbished two argons for me and I've been very pleased with their work in both cases. Companies like Thorlabs sell the diodes as well as mounts and driving electronics. Osram for example produces pretty cheap 450 and 520 nm diodes with powers of 50 mW upwards. The 488nm diode range is still expensive so I went with a 470 nm DPSS laser instead which works fine for GFP. I found that a spatial filter based on a Keplerian beam expander with a Pinhole in the middle cleans up the beam profile a lot. Fiber-coupling might be a little more complicated.
