Hi List, I know this is an off topic (and out of left field)
question, but who else to ask than this forum. I have been toying with an idea of combining an image competition
with some music played by an orchestra I am part of. But I can’t really
think of any music that could be associated with microscopy directly or have
some link to imaging of small things, or just small things in general.. The
best I can come up with would be stuff from the sound track of Microcosmos. Any Ideas? Cam Cameron J. Nowell Office: +61 3 9341 3155 |

Interesting idea. I could imagine Gustav Holst's "The Planets" as working. Lots of room for imagery--though it might be too closely associated with astronomy to transfer to microscopy. Hi Cam,
A former associate, Alenka Lovy-Wheeler did a very interesting thing with her microscopy and let the microscopy BE the music. I don't recall exactly what she did, but she was looking at streaming and particle movements in the growing Lily pollen tube tip and I think she used the rate data for various classes of particles and (with some scaling/massaging of the data, I assume) put it into a WAV file and played it as the soundtrack along with the movie of the growing tip at a seminar. It was a very different way to "see" the data.... How about "Every photon is Sacred" by Simon Watkins?
At this point, some of you are probably smiling, and those who aren't now have a topic to break the ice if they meet Simon at a meeting... ;) -- J. Not necessarily small, but there is "Pictures at an Exhibition", by Mussorgsky, that might pick up on variety in the images.

Colleagues,
Dale Calaham refers to the following article: Alenka Lovy-Wheeler, Joseph G. Kunkel, Ellen G. Allwood, Patrick J. Hussey, and Peter K. Hepler (2006) Oscillatory Increases in Alkalinity Anticipate Growth and May Regulate Actin Dynamics in Pollen Tubes of Lily Plant Cell 18: 2182-2193; (This is open access article so anyone may check it out). The video with auido is the supplemental file. Alenka collaborated with a composer to make a score for the video to help appreciate the various rhythmic behaviors in the pollen tube. I note that this was not simply a mashup with extant audio tracks but involved newly composed music. I think asking for new music would enliven the competion. You can use Mussorgsky's Pictures to illustrate sharp images and Debussy's Images for blurry ones!
