Olympus FE10i

Has anyone had any experience with the Olympus FE10i
"confocal-in-a-box"?  Seems as if it could be useful for live-cell
imaging in a core facility but I'd be interested to know whether or not
it lives up to its potential.

Thanks--

Re: Olympus FE10i

Hi Martin,

We have tried out the oil based version and i must say i went into the
demo feeling pretty sceptical about the system. But i must say that
afterwards i was very impressed. It has some limitations such as you can
only use one objective, you can't scan slower to get a brighter image,
resolution is limited to about 4 settings i think. But that being said
if you have users routinely doing imaging with a 60x oil lens this
system is definitely worth a look.

We will be testing the water based, multi position live system later
this year. If we were to buy one the water based system would be our
choice. The fact you can just park it in a corner some where and let it
do its thing is really appealing.

If you want any more info please feel free to contact me off list if you
want.

And of course as always I have no affiliation or commercial interest
with Olympus, i am just a satisfied customer of their systems.

Cheers

Cam

Dear Martin,

we are currently hosting/testing the Fluoview FV10i (oil variant) in our facility.
I really like the concept and the hardware of the instrument. Unfortunately I have to say that I'm not very convinced of the software that comes with the system. Just to give you an example I really don't understand why Nyquist sampling is considered to be optimal (Button for optimal imaging conditions) in the z-direction but not in the xy-plane. Especially in a facility I find this more confusing than helpful. I also have to impression that there are artificial software brakes so that the potential of the hardware cannot be fully used.

The oil variant cannot be heated thus it is not suitable for live cell imaging.

Just my two pence.

Cheers Arne
