There is little to no reason to bother with other vendors (except price, which is probably a trivial difference compared to total cost of ownership of whatever instrument(s) you are going to put them in). Semrock circular and rectangular (or square) prices and be seen in the "custom size" part of each filter page, example, https://www.semrock.com/FilterDetails.aspx?id=FF01-618/50-25 (you can check with Chroma on their pricing). With respect to dichroics, I am getting good results with the reflection/transmission RT10/90 and "RT03/97" beamsplitter cubes (glass and cube from Thorlabs, cube has just that filter, no exciter or emitter, since our Lumencor SPECTRA-III 360's 8 LED lamp and 10 position filter wheel in light path), current LEDs have plenty of power and/or modest increase in exposure time http://confocal.jhu.edu/current-equipment/fishscope Same beamsplitter: no movement there between acquisitions. The web page credits Sawano ... Miyawaki et al 2002 Biophys J, for the "RT" approach (very likely others have published similar, this is the paper that inspired me). Disclosure(s): Lumencor: We -- Lauren Blake and I -- recently won the Lumencor Earthday 2020 competition, prize being a Lumencor SOLA SE-uNIR lamp (all channels off or on; SPECTRA have individual LED control), using the FISHscope (the emission filters are from Semrock, wheel in IX83 deck from Sutter; IX83 purchased from John Gibas, my predecessor as image core manager here at JHU SOM). https://lumencor.com/2020/09/23/september-2020-light-bytes/ I also want to give a shout out to T. Rao, UAB, the 3rd place winner, for their beautiful interference reflection contrast microscopy (IRM, aka RICM) image (one of several channels). Quantitative IRM (qIRM) is doable, distance from coverglass to bottom of cell in nanometers (and edges of cell), decades before other super-resolution microscopy methods. See Ploem and Prins 2017 RMS InFocus (open access) https://www.rms.org.uk/study-read/infocus-magazine/infocus-listing/reflection-contrast-microscopy-review.html and https://works.bepress.com/gmcnamara/72 and/or search pubmed or email me directly. This is the go to company if your setup is pol sensitive and / or if you care about having a clean beam and an undisturbed wavefront (e.g. for STED). 2) OWIS GmbH (https://www.owis.eu/en/home/) They have an optics sortiment, but they are more focused on optical beam handling systems and positioning systems and they are very good at it. If you care about precision (e.g. for interferometric setups like 4Pi microscopes), you should go for them. And yes, they are more expensive than Thorlabs, but there is a very good reason for it: Their products are super reliable and robust and very precise. 3) Qioptiq Photonics GmbH & Co. KG ( https://www.qioptiq-shop.com/index.php?lang=1& ) This company is in the heart of Germany (in Goettingen). Qioptiq has a big optomechanics and precision optics sortiment. When I worked at the MPI in Goettingen, we used to buy our Achromats at Qioptiq ( https://www.qioptiq-shop.com/en/Precision-Optics/LINOS-Achromats-Lens-Systems/ ). BTW: They have a cute little optics design software called Winlens 3D ( https://www.qioptiq-shop.com/en/Optics-Software/Winlens-Optical-Design-Software/ ). It's a bit like Zemax, but it is for free. 4) B.Halle (https://www.b-halle.de/home_en.html ) Last but definitely not least is a company in Berlin called B.Halle. It is the Porsche among the prism, retarder (lambda/2, lambda/4) and polariser companies. They do not strongly advertise their products and their webpage looks like from the 90s, but the products are just worldclass. Do not build a pol sensitive optical system with other lambda/2, lambda/4 and pol beam splitters, if you want to save yourself time and nerves. Their products are perfect for STED, RESOLFT, etc. Compare the specs of their products with the products of other companies and you will see. I hope the list is helpful. Feel free to contact me in case of questions.
