Dear all,

many of you might have problems in running ZEISS ZEN Black systems
(online or offline) after a bunch of the last Windows 7 updates this week.
Problems are related to the Windows updates with the numbers

# KB 4480970
# KB 4480960

We had success in getting a running ZEN BLACK system again after
de-installing them and rebooting.

On most systems we also see that we can even reinstall them afterwards
again and reboot the system and ZEN still is running.

If it does not work you have to block the Windows update in the
meanwhile, until there is a fix from Microsoft.

This is not logic, but its Windows.....

Best wishes and good luck

Dear Roland,

Thanks for providing this valuable information to the community; you just saved my staff and I a lot of time.

I can confirm that KB 4480970 (which is labeled a "security update") caused startup problems on both an LSM700 and LSM710 system, both running Zen Black on Windows 7. The errors were different in each case, but made the software unusable for both microscopes. Uninstalling the update fixed the issue. I have not tried reinstalling.

Thanks again,
Pablo

The idea that Microsoft will "fix" the problem is unrealistic. This is a Zeiss only problem that affects LSM 510, 700's and 880 microscopes (and maybe others). I would note that no other software at my institution has been adversely affected by the Microsoft updates, at least to my knowledge.

It is Zeiss that needs to come up with a fix to make their softwares Windows compliant.

Let's hope they can do it quickly, because there is a danger of uninstalling security updates and related items.

It affects more the Zen Black - see https://www.bleepingcomputer.com/news/microsoft/windows-kb4480960-and-kb4480970-updates-causing-network-and-license-problems/

It inactivated my mapped drives that use SMBv2 (as well as all of our Zen Black confocals, PCs running Zen Desk and our Elyra) .

Hi All,

I can confirm the Windows update breaks LSM880 systems with a Win7 acquisition PC.  Also, attempting to reinstall it later didn't work.

We had all models of our Zeiss confocals running Zen Black not working with the windows update and even the 510 using LSM software.
uninstalling and hiding the windows updates allowed Zen Black or LSM software and the system to work again.
(I had to combat the automatic re-downloading and updating forced by my IT and uninstalled a few times on one system and ultimately disconnected my systems from the network)

My dept IT found some window update replacement:
https://www.catalog.update.microsoft.com/Search.aspx?q=KB4487345
that they wanted me to use, so I tested it with my offline Zen black license on a computer not running a confocal system, but this new windows update still killed Zen black.

I've been in touch with my Zeiss service rep throughout and he was very helpful and informed me that Zeiss knows about the issue and it has been escalated to Germany for a hotfix, but no word on how long that might be.

But yes, the Windows update is affecting much more than Zeiss software, so hopefully the solutions by Microsoft will help the proper operation of Zeiss software - hopefully by next month's release...

Best,
Lisa

Thank you all guys,

This is a very important piece of information!

On my side, I can contribute adding that instead ZEN black for the light-sheet LZ.1 correctly works after installation of the latest windows updates.

Best,

Davide
