For instance, the UK has "much" more funding available for cores via multi-user grants and most of the funding comes from PI grants and as such PIs are used to paying for the confocals. In France, it appears the cores are heavily subsidsied (staff posts come through CNRS mostly), and PIs would not like to pay FEC rates (or equivalent) and tend to buy their own equipment if price exceed a threshold. Just as an example, in my former core in the UK, confocal was ~30-35GBP/hour; the cores I saw here in Paris region 20€ would be considered expensive... is an updated survey or a European survey planned? key word EuroBioImaging???
