To join, leave or search the confocal microscopy listserv, go to: http://lists.umn.edu/cgi-bin/wa?A0=confocalmicroscopy ***** Fellow Microphotographers, The shutter for the widefield fluorescent light on our Leica SP2 confocal is broken. It uses a standard HBO mercury bulb, so no apertures or Xcite shuttering is available on the system. Since the microscope is an older model, were having a tough time getting a replacement from the vendor, that works. They sent us one, which was defective (last inspected in 2007) and theyre having a tough time finding another one for us. We discussed having a simple pull and push shutter system built, since its easy enough to do I suppose and perhaps even purchasing an Xcite with the idea of applying it to a different microscope when the SP2 eventually died (which might be sooner than later unfortunately). Before going through all of that, I thought that it might be worth a shot to just try and see if anyone has recently decommissioned an SP2 confocal, or perhaps purchased an Xcite for their system. If anyone has a spare shutter from the original set up of their microscope laying around and wouldnt mind donating it to our facility, we would very much appreciate it. Please just reply to this message and I would be happy to send along our information for shipping. We would obviously pay for the shipping and any out of pocket costs. Our SP2 (installed 2000, still going) has a manual shutter for widefield fluorescence. The stand we have, DMR, is more manual than most, since I like it that way... Maybe you could get the engineering drawings for your shutter and get a replacement made by one of these 3D printing companies that seem to be sprouting like weeds. It would probably last as long as your SP2, since I'm told Leica will guarantee spare parts only until 2015 (at least for our model). good luck, Rosemary White Dr Rosemary White CSIRO Plant Industry GPO Box 1600 Canberra, ACT 2601 Australia T 61 2 6246 5475 F 61 2 6246 5334 E [hidden email] On 20/03/13 3:45 AM, "Christina Polumbo" <[hidden email]> wrote: >***** >To join, leave or search the confocal microscopy listserv, go to: >http://lists.umn.edu/cgi-bin/wa?A0=confocalmicroscopy >***** > >Fellow Microphotographers, > >The shutter for the widefield fluorescent light on our Leica SP2 confocal >is broken. To join, leave or search the confocal microscopy listserv, go to: http://lists.umn.edu/cgi-bin/wa?A0=confocalmicroscopy ***** Sorry for the delay, folks. We have a DMRE2 stand with no manual shutter. The shutter is located in the back of the body of the scope and an electric pulse triggers it to open and close from the shutter button on the front of the microscope. Thats the part that broke. You pus the button and nothing happens. The filter wheel is also motorized. The suggestions from everyone are pefectly in-line with what we were also thinking, we do have Uniblitz shutters in the facility but I believe they are all in use at the moment. I will look around for a spare and the controller. I figured that since the microscope was so old, that maybe others had replaced their widefield set up with something else, like an Xcite or something, leaving a old spare shutter lying on a dusty shelf somewhere. Seemed like the most straight forward solution, but we will certainly look at other options! To join, leave or search the confocal microscopy listserv, go to: http://lists.umn.edu/cgi-bin/wa?A0=confocalmicroscopy ***** Christina, you'll have to make sure you have the appropriate shutter and the appropriate connector. Vincent will otherwise sell you an adapter for that specific Leica dove tail connector. ALSO: There are many different types of shutters, which only differ in small but essential details! The shutter you will need for an arc lamp, irrespectively of whether it is Hg or Xe, needs to have the shutter elements coated AR and you need the high temperature option! Make sure the shutters you have and want to use fulfill these demands. Also, on the rear side of the shutter controllers there are on some models dip switches, which have to be set in order to send the correct electrical pulse energies to the shutters. 25mm and 35mm shutters need other energies than the laser shutters. Best wishes, Johannes > Sorry for the delay, folks.
