This sad news just came across my desk on the passing of FSU's Mike Davidson.

We will miss him terribly.

Thank you for posting this, Barbara.  "Fundamentals of Light
Microscopy", which he co-wrote with Douglas Murphy, is probably the best
introductory text out there.

I'm so sorry to hear he's gone.  That's a loss for all of us.

Thanks Martin for informing us about Mike Davidson that he went to another planet. He did a fantastic job and many people benefited in this planet earth.
He edited a book with Rich Day, on the "The Fluorescent Protein Revolution". He created fantastic images for that book.
This was published in May 2015. During that time he emailed us and I am a series book editor on Cellular and Clinical Imaging. I think it is nothing wrong to share his email to the list, since many people including me and my class students benefited from his contribution in this field. May God bless his spirit to live in peace. He might have gone but his contribution will live forever.
Here is the email send during May 9, 2014. Luna is in-charge for publishing this book series.

Luna,

Thanks for the information and I'm glad to see the book completed.  I have terminal cancer and won't be able to see it if it takes more than 3-4 weeks to get here.  Can you have someone FedEx (141851772) to me collect?

Thanks for posting this, Barbara.  I spent part of a sabbatical in
Tallahassee with Mike in 2002, before his work with fluorescent proteins.
At that time, his facility was a complex mix of microscopes, computer
terminals (for the website), and boxes and boxes of neckties which had been
imprinted with polarized micrographs of various dried solutions.  I
remember a set of wine images on neckties, of cabernets, merlots, pinot
noir, pinot grigio, etc, which came in a classic wine case.  As mentioned
in the obit, these neckties were a major source of funding at the
beginning.

His great service to the field, however, was the establishment of the
microscopy website, micro.magnet.fsu.edu, which has been a valuable
resource both for amateurs and professionals for more than fifteen years. I
was struck by his strategy of using high school students as coders for the
website.  He gave them a place to "play" after school that has served them
all well as they have grown up. I still use the java applets as an integral
part of the microscopy course that I offer here at Temple to both
undergraduates and graduate students.  Indeed, when I began teaching the
course, the internet was so unreliable on our campus that I was unable to
bring up the examples in real time.  When I told Mike about the problem, he
sent me discs containing the entire site, with permission to distribute
them to the class, as needed.  Since then the site has expanded through the
wise collaborations of Nikon, Olympus and Zeiss, and it is still
interesting to note the familial resemblance of the texts and illustration
style.  The site is not only a good introduction to microscope optics, but
it is also an excellent guide to the history of microscopy and
microscopists.

One other aspect of his special character, in addition to his interest in
helping people get started, is that he was a remarkable artist with the
microscope. I have a collection of some fifty images that he produced of
fluorescently stained cells that should, rightly, be displayed in a museum.

Mike will certainly be missed, and I commend Eric for taking over the
management of the website.

I am so sorry to hear of Mike's passing. I knew he was very ill, but had not spoken to him in several months. The article that Barbara posted is wonderful and really captures what Mike was all about. I had him sign my copy of his book with Douglas Murphy. We had a laugh about it and had made plans to start some collaborative work on Dictyostelium expression vectors a few months before he found out he was sick. I really hate that we never got the opportunity to do it.

He was always very supportive of my efforts as a core director at Clemson, as a microscopist, and as a researcher. I am thankful for the (all too brief) time that I knew him. This past semester, I taught an intro microscopy class using the Murphy-Davidson text. I thought of Mike each time that I used one of his amazing graphics. The next time that I teach the class, I know that I will miss him terribly.

Truly a great loss for our community...

Thanks for the message Barbara;

So sad, and we'll miss his influence greatly.
Do you know of any plans for a memorial donation site?

Few researchers can claim to be as knowledgeable in the ways of microscopy and imaging as Davidson.  I am honored to have known Mike, to have collaborated with him, and to have coauthored with him.  Sad news indeed.  He will be missed.

Re: Sad news: Mike Davidson passed away

I’d like to support all the sentiments expressed.

Mike was a very generous collaborator with our group (we’re still writing the paper and working with the constructs he so generously provided us with).  He will be sorely missed indeed.

Very nice piece!

I already informed the NYT that the HHMI Janelia is in Ashburn, VA, and not Chevy Chase, MD...
