From time to time I have noticed facilities and labs advertising old
equipment that they have for sale on the listserve.  I am interested to
hear people's experiences (both buyers and sellers).  I would also be happy
to hear opinions on whether people feel this is a good use for the list.

Thanks,

Doug

Ladies and Gentlemen:

I am likewise interested in reconditioned equipment, in particular a Zeiss LSM 700.
Thanks.

Hi Doug,

While I was at Northwestern, we sold a JEOL 100CX, a JEOL 1220, a FujiFILM
FLA 5100 scanner, an older version of Yokogawa spinning disk and a Zeiss
LSM510 META. We also sold a very old laser for  craps after waiting for
more than a year with no buyer.

The two TEMs were sold to external buyers (all non-profit universities),
the other three system we sold to internal Northwestern labs/departments.

Selling EM takes a lot of luck. You should know that companies like JEOL,
Hitachi or FEI charge you exorbitant price to disassemble and reassemble
the instruments. They make it prohibitive because they want to minimize
such practice, understandably. We hired a EM moving company based in
Illinois. It has been a while and I honestly cannot remember the name. It
was a one-man operation that functioned like an well-oiled machine. He
disassembled everything in two afternoons, packed and hauled it, and drove
the scope to the other university, set it up and tested it. He offered a
two-month coverage plan just in case there is any issue, then JEOL took
over the regular service contract. In both instances, the buyers did not
call him back for further support - the scopes just worked.

Your institution may also have ³old instrument² site, should check into
that. I have heard many horror stories from folks who have sold their
instruments through some of the ³surplus² sites. They do not provide
decent technical support, especially for something delicate like a high
end microscope. I have placed several calls with them and they were quite
clueless, because the front-end operators do not know microscopes. They
were shocked that my TEM was asking for $25,000, when one could buy a new
Œmicroscope' (tissue culture grade) for a few thousands!

Don¹t know if it is kosher to use this list for such announcement.

My best,
Leong
