Dear list members,

We are organising a BSc-MSc level course on basic and advanced light
microscopy and we'd like to recommend textbooks for the  students. I always
add Jim Pawley's book of course, but we'd also like some that may be
available on the web, perhaps as PDF, for easier access to the students.
Would you have any suggestions?? Any help will be much appreciated!

With best wishes to all, and have a great weekend,

Zoltan

Hi Zoltan,

I know you asked for text books but the IBiology Microscopy series of videos is a nice resource too if you haven't seen that:
https://www.ibiology.org/ibioeducation/taking-courses/ibiology-microscopy-course.html

Thanks,

Matt

Hecht's "Optics" is a good overview of ray and wave optics and was a staple
for me back in the day. I warn you though that students tend to have a
love/hate relationship with it, so depending on your group it may or may
not be a good choice.

To my knowledge this isn't available on-line, but D. Murphy and M.
Davidson's "Fundamentals of Light Microscopy and Electronic Imaging" is
an excellent overview of the whole field.

You can ask the students to visit the microscopy U web site and also any microscopy companies web site
I am using the following books in my microscopy class
1. Murphy, D.B. and Davidson, M.W. Fundamentals of Light Microscopy and Electronic Imaging, 2nd Edition. John Wiley & Sons, NY, 2013.
2. Foster, B. Optimizing Light Microscopy for Biological and Clinical Laboratories, Kendall/Hunt Publishing Company, American Society for Clinical Laboratory Science, 1997.
Hope this helps.

Oh, just remembered the SPIE Field Guide to Light Microscopy:
http://spie.org/Publications/Book/798239?SSO=1

It's cheap and gives a nice overview of the various common microscopy
techniques. It is available in dead tree or PDF form as well. I've
suggested it in the past as a quick primer for follow-ups to my lectures
and the students appreciated the comparatively low cost compared to
traditional texts.

I'm a bit late to the party, but I would certainly support the
recommendations of the Davidson and Murphy text (second edition).  I also
make extensive use of the original microscopy web site that Mike Davidson
set up at http://microscopy.magnet.fsu.edu.  It's getting a little long in
the tooth --some of the Java applets don't work as well as they used to,
but I still find all of the information quite useful.  Last I heard, Eric
and company were trying to keep it functioning, and now there are all of
the offshoots run by the microscopy companies themselves.

***COMMERCIAL AND SELF-SERVING POST***

Hi all,

I suppose this is somewhat COMMERCIAL or self-serving and I have been loath to post about it to this forum up to this point, but considering the conversation I thought I would chime in that I recently wrote a book.
It is called The Cell and although the beginning and end focus on basics of MCB and real-world application and issues, respectively, the core of the book is a series of chapters explaining topics like confocal, lightsheet, TIRF, FRAP etc.
The book is aimed for the non expert and is largely qualitative and easily accessible for an undergraduate level student
Please email me directly if you would like to discuss further and PARDON THE SHAMELESS SELF PROMOTION

Here are some links to the book:

Dear List members,

On Thursday 14 and Friday 15 December I will organize for the 14th time the ImageJ/Fiji workshops in Leicester. The workshops are a mixture of lectures and hands-on sessions. No prior knowledge of ImageJ, Fiji or macro coding is required, only basic use of a computer. For further information and registration please visit https://www2.le.ac.uk/colleges/medbiopsych/facilities-and-services/cbs/AIF/workshops/imagej-workshops-December-2017.

Best wishes

Kees
