Hi All,
We have an external user interested in using our laser scanning confocal, and we are trying to calculate how much to charge. We do not want to undercut commercial vendors, but I have been unable to locate any to use for comparison. If anyone knows of such a place, please let me know. Thanks, Carol Carol E. Hi Carol,
For what it is worth, I run a similar facility at Umass Amherst and our steering committee set the "outside" rate at 2x the Umass user rate. It is a bit arbitrary and probably should be higher. A business gets no duty-free instruments nor educational discounts on service contracts, etc. We are pressured to be helpful to business and outside research but with a staff of one (me) and heavily used instruments I mostly have to decline requests for outside work. I just have a disclaimer on our website that we don't intend to compete with business enterprises and such businesses should notify us if they can provide equivalent services; I have never been contacted. Hi Carol We offer commercial services for confocal imaging. Calculation
of costs is a complex issue based on instrument depreciation, overhead costs,
consumables and staff charge rates. We usually quote on a per enquiry basis. Since
you don't need to address profitability you could just calculate an hourly cost
based on instrument depreciation and consumables. Regards Dr Lloyd Donaldson Senior Scientist Scion - Next Generation Biomaterials 49 Sala St. Rotorua Private Bag 3020, Rotorua 3046 NEW ZEALAND Ph: 64 7 343 5581 Fx: 64 7 343 5507 www.scionresearch.com From: Confocal Microscopy List
