Hahahaa, you guys are so funny. I got 17 replies to my query about turning
an iPhone into a microscope, and no two were the same. And most of them
were along the lines of "I saw this one on the Internet...".

If anyone is particularly interested, I can send a list of links or
forward some of the responses. Here is the one that the person who
requested feedback is looking at (and is not one of the ones any of you
mentioned):

It holds a slide and I think has a light source.

Aloha,
Tina

I've heard back from my archaeologist colleague (who turns out to be in Athens but not on a dig right now).  My memory was a but faulty, what she used was Dino-Lite USB microscope which plugs into a notebook computer.

Yes, please post a list of all the options, would be good for science outreach programs.
The uHandy attachment seems to follow the same approach as the foldscope, using a small ball lens. But it comes at a vastly higher price (well at least it is commercially available). It seems to be very well made and looks good. You have to keep in mind that you are basically stuck with one magnification at a time. Not sure if they supply different lenses like the foldscope, but the high magnification ball lenses are difficult to use and have a small field of view. For me the fun about microscopy was to go from lower to higher mag by changing the lenses without losing bit you are looking at, the camera zoom does not really give finer detail. It looks like there are zoom versions of the Dino lite.  Another question is if you are happy with slides and looking at thin objects in transmission, the uHandy does this.  If you rather want to look at the surface of something non-transparent, basically in reflection, you need the light coming from the side of the lens, I think this is what the Dino lite does.

Best wishes
Andreas
