I have used Cargille in the past and their LDF type has the correct RI but they claim it has an odor. Has anyone used it and found it unpleasant? They also have type HF but it has a high viscosity (700 cSt) and may be problematic if the cover slip is not attached firmly to the sample. Any comments? I do like the ease of use of their 7.4cc dispensers. I have used both Zeiss oil on a Zeiss confocal and Leica oil on a Leica confocal and they have worked well. Any other suggestions? Thanks Judy Trogadis Bio-Imaging Coordinator Keenan Research Centre, St. Michael's Hospital 209 Victoria Street Toronto M5B 1T8, Canada office: 416-864-6060 ext. 77612 imaging facility: ext. 77434 cell: 416-254-9330 [hidden email] |

We found that the cargille has a strong moth ball like odor. The general consensus was that we could not deal with the odor. The closest oil that cargille carries with out the odor has background fluorescence. After our test (with confocal and widefield / on multiple brand microscope (zeiss, olympus, and leica) ) we found that the zeiss oil has the best performance overall for all of the microscope. We did not have leica oil to test. We tested the delta vision, zeiss, olympus, and two cargille oils. Hope this helps. |

Cargille reformulated their oils. We were able to obtain samples from them for testing. We now routinely use Cargille type HF (Formula code 368) for most of our applications. and Cargille type A (Formula code 1248) for applications where low viscosity is needed. This is primarily for live cell imaging with fast z acquisition where the type HF creates too much drag. Type A is quite runny, and special care is needed on inverted scopes. The Zeiss immersol 518 works fine too. It is a bit less viscous than Cargille HF. I bought it about a year ago. Have they reformulated since then? For a while, DF was not available. Then they came up with a new formulation that was supposed to be a replacement for DF, but had the nasty smell. In the following months, we purchased small amounts of various Cargille oils (not sure if these were new or old products), until we settled on the type HF and type A. The original DF oil was Cat # 16242. This was replaced by DF Cat # 48218-506. I think this was the stinky one. Then the DF disappeared from the Cargille product list. I don't know if any of the other oils currently listed have the odor problem. If you are interested, our imaging specialist Dave McDonald can send you more info when he comes back from his vacation... he tested quite a few oils, and still has samples around. You may also be able to get the info from Cargille.
