Dear List--

I got an announcement today from Abberior about their STED instruments
(http://abberior-instruments.net/) and was wondering if anyone had had a
chance yet to compare them with the Leica STED machines.  Are there
relative strengths and weaknesses?

(No commercial connection with either system.)

Thanks!

Martin

Hi,

I don't have any knowledge about the Abberior instrument, but I just wanted
to add that Picoquant also offers a STED microscope now (no commercial
interest):
http://www.picoquant.com/applications/category/life-science/sted#tab-2

Best regards,

Christophe

Dear Martin,

Unfortunately, I have not yet tested the Aberrior setup (so I can't
comment on it), but we have just received our Leica STED system (and are
happy with it). On the other hand, at the last ELMI meeting I had the
opportunity to have an in depth discussion with a number of Aberrior
developers so I still may comment on your question. Based on that
discussion I'd state the following (note that this is my very subjective
view):

- The Aberrior is a low(er) budget instrument that offers lot of
flexibility but is rather targeted for individual groups and developers.
Its software (because of obvious reasons) is less user friendly then the
Leica one.
- The Leica is based on well appreciated high-end confocal (SP8), so it is
a very user friendly system offering much less (=no) flexibility for own
developments.

For a central core facility (if one can afford it) I would rather suggest
the Leica, for a developer group or for places with financial constrains
the Aberrior is perhaps a better solution. Of course other factors like:
do you use it "only" for STED or also for other purposes? - may also have
an effect on your decision. In our case we are not using our Leica
SP8/STED exclusively for super-resolution work but also as a high end
routine confocal. Hopefully this helps a little bit.

Greetings    Gabor
