I would pretty much appreciate any advice on this, advantages and disadvantages of the different softwares you are currently using, to be able to find one that fits ours needs (the usual, tuneable booking calendars, management of booking polocies, user permissions, statistics of used hours, invoicing, maintenance interventions and others...). To join, leave or search the confocal microscopy listserv, go to: http://lists.umn.edu/cgi-bin/wa?A0=confocalmicroscopy ***** Dear Elena, Please have a look at http://www.cirklo.org/agendo.php Agendo is an open source booking system with lots of options originally made by core facility managers. Be aware though that installation can be tricky, you will need email, http and database servers, backups, etc. Cirklo also offers hosting that can be paid by you or by a sponsor by adding advertising in the booking page. Have a look at this example from Fisher Scientific. https://agendo.cirklo.org/icat/weekview.php?resource=61 Please contact me off list for further details. To join, leave or search the confocal microscopy listserv, go to: http://lists.umn.edu/cgi-bin/wa?A0=confocalmicroscopy ***** Dear Elena, We use the the open source application phpScheduleIt (http://www.php.brickhost.com/) and are quite happy with it. The users think it's easy to book systems and get an overview of the booking situation of all systems. As a manager I appreciate that I easily can get all kinds of statistics from the database. Feel free to contact me off list for more information. To join, leave or search the confocal microscopy listserv, go to: http://lists.umn.edu/cgi-bin/wa?A0=confocalmicroscopy ***** Hi Elena, We have been chasing after open access / free solutions for years and none of them incorporate all we need. We finally decided to go with a commercial solution (PPMS from Stratocore): their web-based solution was developed in the spirit of Core facility. It's very user friendly (for users and for core staff as well) and includes all the features you can dream of: bookings, permission management, trainings, incident reports, publication reporting, usage tracking, billing, usage stats. Sure, it's not free, but it will save you so much time (and money) that it's definitely worth thinking about it. I have no commercial interest with Stratocore: I'm just a happy customer. Good luck for your search! Elena,
We just completed a pretty extensive evaluation of both commercial and free programs. I agree with the other posters regarding things like phpScheduleit (an application I actually helped develop here at the University of Chicago), and IdeaElan, but I'd encourage you to definitely check out iLab Solutions (http://www.ilabsolutions.com/) they have a very extensive set of utilities that I'm sure would suit your needs. We are about to launch that system for our core facility, which has a dozen or so instruments, and about 200 labs. iLab's system is very comprehensive and modular, so you can pick and choose which parts would best suit your needs. I've also found working with the iLab group to be a definite plus - something you'd need to consider if you're looking at "open-source" stuff. If you're like me, you don't have time to tweak php code all day. Anyway, thought I'd mention this service if you're interested. By the way, I have received no financial incentive to say this. This is just my honest opinion. |
