It was the first I heard, even though I live here in Eugene where he passed away! As I understand, he loved it here. It's was very hot here earlier this week, with a lot of ash in the air from forest fires. Not the ideal climate for riding a bike on trails. I wonder if that contributed? I've shared the news with my colleagues here at Molecular Probes, where he is revered, and on the Molecular Probes and Gibco Facebook pages. He will be missed. It can't be overstated how amazing of a contribution he made to our field. That is too young for a fit, active man to die. Roger Tsien never let fame and honours go to his head. He was always completely approachable, friendly, and helpful. He and I didn't agree on one or two issues - and debate was always friendly and respectful. He didn't even hold it against me that I was from Oxford and he was from Cambridge!. He will be sadly missed. As those of us in that age group and older pass on, the younger generation of researchers with their different view of living life will have to carry on. Despite a truly remarkable line of folks waiting to see his poster he found time to ask about my project and offer some supportive (and very helpful!) feedback. It took a year or two for me to realize the significance of that encounter. Roger Tsien was truly one of the most unassuming and generous scientists I have met. RIP. Sad news indeed. I had the good fortune of listening to his lecture a few years back, where he spoke about his latest work on the medical applications of using GFP or derivatives during live surgery to demarcate the nerve from the tumor tissue to be excised. This was really useful translational research at the clinic that he was putting basic science to clinical use. He had mentioned in the lecture that he was a cancer survivor himself, I wonder if the cancer had anything to do with his passing.
