Dear listers,

In Madrid, teaching and many other collective activities have been
suspended for 15 days because of COVID19. On the other hand, research
institutes continue with their normal activity although at a lower level.

In order to reduce as much as possible the spread of the virus, our
advanced bioimaging facility is considering to implement additional
measures or protocols (beyond common sense).

We would be very grateful if you could share your advice, suggestions
and protocols especially regarding the cleaning procedures of the
instruments (binocular, focus knobs, switches, stage joysticks, etc) and
other measures that affect to the users (wear gloves, etc). We are
interested to know about easy and effective cleaning procedures that
would not be harmful for the optics, electronics, etc.

thanks for your email:

I think it's a very good idea to share knowledge about organizing our every day life at work during this emergency.

Our research department is still open with reduced activity. The access to the labs is organized in two rounds (morning: from 02 am to 13 pm and afternoon from 14 pm to 01)am in order to limit occupancy and eventually to restrict the number of potentially infected people that must enter quarantine

In agreement with our imaging unit personnel we defined some simple rules:

- wash hands with OMS approved cleaning solutions

- handles of the entrance doors are periodically disinfected

- users must wear clean gloves during their work at the microscope

- surfaces and common parts (e.g. knobs and keys) of the instruments must be cleaned with appropriate detergents (cointaining at least 80% EtOH) at the beginning and at the end of each session

- we remind to microscope users to use the appropriate solutions for lenses (e.g. absolute EtOH ). In this moment everyone of us is receiving a lot of rules to help in containing virus spreading and we thought it is better to remind even the basic principles. And I also suggest you to keep an eye on your EtOH stocks in this period since they can be exausted at an higher rate

- distances among people must be > 1 m

- no more than 1 user is allowed at each instrument

Thank you Mario, for these helpful suggestions. While our facility is in an area currently at low risk, I see the need to plan this out for our faculty users, in addition to to contingency plans my PI’s lab manager is crafting for our personal research lab.

Hi to everybody,
following recommendations for IFOM facility in Milan
:
IMAGING
do not come in the imaging Facility with your own lab coat
use the disposable lab coat that you find in the imaging facility writing your name on it
at the end of the day trash it
The room of wide field microscopes is open to maximum 3 people at the same time
ALWAYS use gloves and lab coat
Before each session sanitize the eyepieces of the microscope
During assisted sessions already scheduled maintain the required safe distance (at least 1 meter)

All,
I don't mean to sound dramatic but the general recommendation should be for
people to work from home. This is true for all my fellow Italian
researchers as of this week but I whole-heartedly suggest to the other
facilities to implement strict measures now versus waiting to see how bad
can it get...

Honestly, all imaging of fixed samples can wait for a few weeks. Live
imaging of very long term experiments might warrant a special exception but
those can be handled on a case-by-case basis.

Giving official recommendations that make it sound like it's OK to conduct
research "with normal precautions" conveys the wrong sense of urgency in
people.

Please, take a look at the reports from healthcare professionals in all
affected areas and consider whether it's not better to prioritize working
on your analysis pipeline or a manuscript for a few weeks.

Dear Javier,

here in Milano, as already mentioned by Mario and Dario, we are still available (althouhg at lower level as well) but we implemented, according to Institute Direction, different measures to reduce as much as possibile the access to the Facility and we recommended to our Users to perform only urgent and undelayable experiments.

Facility Staff:
we reduced staff members daily present to the minimum is possible
Facility entrance:
- Instruments will be available only from 08:00 to 18:00 from Monday to Friday (instead 24/24h, 7/7d) and instrument usage is not allowed on holidays and outside of this time schedule.
- A disposable glove dispenser has been set up outside the entrance door of the facility. All Users must wear them before entering the Facility and leave them in a dedicated container as they finish their activities.
- the entrance to the Facility will be regulated in order to avoid any form of crowding that sees multiple subjects in the same room at a distance of less than 1.8 meters.
- Instruments use, including microscopes mouse and keyboards, must be done by wearing gloves and, as much as possible, with the own protective glasses (please, remember that Covid-19 seems particularly transmitted by aerosol contact with conjunctive).
- At the end of each session, each User must notify it to the Facility Staff who will disinfect the exposed parts with Ethanol 70% (microscope, mouse, keyboards, touchscreens etc. all parts that could be usually touched by hands or eyes, using a disposable cloths.
- we require only one person per Instrument and, for the same reason, trainings and assisted uses are temporarily suspended.

Instruments maintenance :
no different procedures respect usual maintenance cleaning

THANK YOU BOTH very much for emphasizing the importance of decontaminating
the eye-pieces. It's obvious in retrospect but I was focussed on the
computer keyboard, mouse, etc. --Are you using 80% ethanol on the
eye-pieces?

Yes Martin,

we use 70% Ethanol for eye-pieces like for each workspace
(computer+microscope+devices,etc.)

They recommended to us considering its volatility and fire point having
to use (relatively) "a lot" in a (relatively) small room.

Has anyone tried other disinfectants such as 3% peroxide? 70% EtOH tends to remove some paints, decals and rubber/plastic finishes.

I agree that >60% Ethanol degrades the finish and plastics/rubber over time. We have routinely used Ecolabs Peroxide Multi Surface Cleaner and Disinfectant. It contains 8% Hydrogen Peroxide.

Very useful discussion as I am currently writing up internal recommendations as well.

It looks as if a 1 minute exposure to 0.5% hydrogen peroxide will reduce
levels of a human coronavirus (--not the one responsible for covid-19, so
"your mileage may vary") by a factor of 10^4. That's not quite as good as
85% or 95% ethanol (10^5.5 in 30 seconds), but better than 70% isopropyl
alcohol (2-propanol) (10^3.3 in 30 seconds).

Also, coronaviruses can last for days on a plastic surface.

I misread the article: hydrogen peroxide was tested against a *suspension *of
coronavirus particles--it was not tested as a solution to use to disinfect
*surfaces*. On surfaces, 70% ethanol for 1 minute was reported to reduce
various coronaviruses by factors of 10^2 to 10^4.

Thank you for this very helpful thread!
I was just about to setup stricter rules / recommendations for our facility as the COVID19 wave is hitting Switzerland.

So far we just asked everybody to wash hands thoroughly before and after using the microscope but I will now include your points, in particular the one concerning the disinfection of the oculars.
I will also try to motivate people to rather analyse their data remotely from home than imaging new samples.

I misread the article: hydrogen peroxide was tested against a *suspension *of
coronavirus particles--it was not tested as a solution to use to disinfect
*surfaces*. On surfaces, 70% ethanol for 1 minute was reported to reduce
various coronaviruses by factors of 10^2 to 10^4.

I agree that >60% Ethanol degrades the finish and plastics/rubber over
time. We have routinely used Ecolabs Peroxide Multi Surface Cleaner and
Disinfectant. It contains 8% Hydrogen Peroxide.

Very useful discussion as I am currently writing up internal
recommendations as well.

Has anyone tried other disinfectants such as 3% peroxide? 70% EtOH tends
to remove some paints, decals and rubber/plastic finishes.

Former professional laser service technician here, Senior technician (optics and instrumentation) for my university employer. With over 25 years experience in lasers and optics.
I maintain my department's Confocal. I also teach the graduate students operations, imaging theory, and image processing. Actual biology is taught by the professors, although I've had to learn much about dyes and quantum dots along the way.

With the exception of UV and Mid-far IR optics, ultra high purity, dry, Methanol in the US, and Ethanol, (Europe) are the desired cleaning agents for most coated lenses and mirrors. HPLC or Spectroscopy grade are preferred . Pharmacy grade materials are to be avoided as the denaturants used generally react with moisture or do not evaporate and leave a white film on the optics.

Acetone is used to remove fatty materials and fingerprint residues, although sparingly as it tends to damage the adhesives used to hold optics in place. Acetone accelerates the degradation of materials used to bond together lenses that are corrected for chromatic aberration. (Optical Epoxies, Balsam Cements)

In an absolute worse case, 3% peroxide in water may be used to "Save" an optic if the containment is stubborn, followed by immediate treatment with an anhydrous alcohol.

Where microscopy differs from laser optics and larger lenses, is the general use of very soft microfiber or nanofiber cloths rather then lens tissue. This is done to avoid any risk of scratching the optic and due to the small size of objectives. Also they reach into nooks and crannies, where lens tissue or swabs would miss the edges or gaps in microscope structures. These cloths usually have a protrusive structure, many tiny bumps, rather then a relatively flat surface such as lens tissue. Technicians who annually service our Confocals, from two major companies, have both told me they launder their microfiber cloths, multiple times, to break down and soften them.

Water is to be avoided, as are ammonia and soap based lens cleaners sold for camera optics. Ammonia quickly damages silvered or aluminized reflective optics and is not kind to many types of coated optics. Chlorinated solvents are probably going to cause immediate systems damage for most instruments.

If you have Catadioptic or Immersion lenses, Reflective Optics, or IR or UV optics that are not glass or fused silica, consult your manufacturer.

If your manual does not specify a cleaning technique and you are sure that your optic is glass or fused silica:

First step is trying to remove dust by using an air puffer or clean jet of filtered dry air or nitrogen. Do not use fluorocarbon based "Canned Air" products as fluorocarbons damage many optical coatings.

Second step is moistened microfiber cloth using alcohol or acetone to wipe the optic using a figure eight or circular in and out stroking pattern for objectives. Remoisten the cloth, move to a clean segment clean again, if needed. Avoid more then mild pressure, you really just need a gentle wipe. Final clean is usually an alcohol. Avoid "Dry Wiping" without a solvent or fluid, at all costs.

The idea is use a minimal amount of solvent, flooding the apparatus is bad form.

If the containment is stubborn, Acetone, then Alcohol, or Acetone, Peroxide , Alcohol, is the sequence.

When a microfiber cloth is not working or the optic is in a difficult place, the alternative is a wood stick cotton throat swab in a sealed sterile package, one that has NO glue or NO adhesive holding the cotton to the shaft. Plastic stems or cardboard stems are to be avoided at all costs. Wood stemmed swabs get a "Flush and Shake" maneuver to remove gross contamination, then are remoistened and used to clean the optic once. Proper procedure is to roll the swab as you move it along the optic, so that a fresh surface is being used at all times. I teach the ceremonial breaking of the wood shaft to prevent reuse.

For large optics, or dichroic optics, we use the drop and drag technique with lens tissue where possible.

For very critical intra-cavity laser optics or difficult materials such as optical fibers, we use the standard folded lens tissue with hemostats. Learning this technique generally requires instruction, as folding the tissue without touching it, is difficult.

Our service technician taught me to use soap and water on the eye cups, followed by alcohol on lens tissue as a wipe.

I'd suggest the following videos. I imagine that cleaning the microscope to sterilize it may result in a few cases of dirty optics, so I posted this email.

When in doubt, start with the manual, especially if still in warranty.

Thank you for this very helpful thread!
I was just about to setup stricter rules / recommendations for our facility as the COVID19 wave is hitting Switzerland.

So far we just asked everybody to wash hands thoroughly before and after using the microscope but I will now include your points, in particular the one concerning the disinfection of the oculars.
I will also try to motivate people to rather analyse their data remotely from home than imaging new samples.

I misread the article: hydrogen peroxide was tested against a *suspension *of
coronavirus particles--it was not tested as a solution to use to disinfect
*surfaces*. On surfaces, 70% ethanol for 1 minute was reported to reduce
various coronaviruses by factors of 10^2 to 10^4.

I agree that >60% Ethanol degrades the finish and plastics/rubber over
time. We have routinely used Ecolabs Peroxide Multi Surface Cleaner and
Disinfectant. It contains 8% Hydrogen Peroxide.

Has anyone tried other disinfectants such as 3% peroxide? 70% EtOH tends
to remove some paints, decals and rubber/plastic finishes.

Yes Martin,

we use 70% Ethanol for eye-pieces like for each workspace
(computer+microscope+devices,etc.)

They recommended to us considering its volatility and fire point having
to use (relatively) "a lot" in a (relatively) small room.

Dear Javier,

here in Milano, as already mentioned by Mario and Dario, we are still
available (althouhg at lower level as well) but we implemented,
according
to Institute Direction, different measures to reduce as much as
possibile
the access to the Facility and we recommended to our Users to perform
only
urgent and undelayable experiments.

Facility Staff:
we reduced staff members daily present to the minimum is possible
Facility entrance:
- Instruments will be available only from 08:00 to 18:00 from Monday to
Friday (instead 24/24h, 7/7d) and instrument usage is not allowed on
holidays and outside of this time schedule.
- A disposable glove dispenser has been set up outside the entrance
door
of the facility. All Users must wear them before entering the Facility
and
leave them in a dedicated container as they finish their activities.
- the entrance to the Facility will be regulated in order to avoid any
form of crowding that sees multiple subjects in the same room at a
distance
of less than 1.8 meters.
- Instruments use, including microscopes mouse and keyboards, must be
done
by wearing gloves and, as much as possible, with the own protective
glasses
(please, remember that Covid-19 seems particularly transmitted by
aerosol
contact with conjunctive).
- At the end of each session, each User must notify it to the Facility
Staff who will disinfect the exposed parts with Ethanol 70%
(microscope,
mouse, keyboards, touchscreens etc. all parts that could be usually
touched
by hands or eyes, using a disposable cloths.
- we require only one person per Instrument and, for the same reason,
trainings and assisted uses are temporarily suspended.

Instruments maintenance :
no different procedures respect usual maintenance cleaning

In Madrid, teaching and many other collective activities have been
suspended for 15 days because of COVID19. On the other hand, research
institutes continue with their normal activity although at a lower
level.

In order to reduce as much as possible the spread of the virus, our
advanced bioimaging facility is considering to implement additional
measures or protocols (beyond common sense).

We would be very grateful if you could share your advice, suggestions

protocols especially regarding the cleaning procedures of the
instruments
(binocular, focus knobs, switches, stage joysticks, etc) and other

Hi all,

Methanol vapors are toxic, especially when methanol is used in a confined space like a microscope room. Ethanol is less toxic and readily available to labs in the US at 95% or 100%.

Former professional laser service technician here, Senior technician (optics and instrumentation) for my university employer. With over 25 years experience in lasers and optics.
I maintain my department's Confocal. I also teach the graduate students operations, imaging theory, and image processing. Actual biology is taught by the professors, although I've had to learn much about dyes and quantum dots along the way.

With the exception of UV and Mid-far IR optics, ultra high purity, dry, Methanol in the US, and Ethanol, (Europe) are the desired cleaning agents for most coated lenses and mirrors. HPLC or Spectroscopy grade are preferred . Pharmacy grade materials are to be avoided as the denaturants used generally react with moisture or do not evaporate and leave a white film on the optics.

Acetone is used to remove fatty materials and fingerprint residues, although sparingly as it tends to damage the adhesives used to hold optics in place. Acetone accelerates the degradation of materials used to bond together lenses that are corrected for chromatic aberration. (Optical Epoxies, Balsam Cements)

In an absolute worse case, 3% peroxide in water may be used to "Save" an optic if the containment is stubborn, followed by immediate treatment with an anhydrous alcohol.

Where microscopy differs from laser optics and larger lenses, is the general use of very soft microfiber or nanofiber cloths rather then lens tissue. This is done to avoid any risk of scratching the optic and due to the small size of objectives. Also they reach into nooks and crannies, where lens tissue or swabs would miss the edges or gaps in microscope structures. These cloths usually have a protrusive structure, many tiny bumps, rather then a relatively flat surface such as lens tissue. Technicians who annually service our Confocals, from two major companies, have both told me they launder their microfiber cloths, multiple times, to break down and soften them.

Water is to be avoided, as are ammonia and soap based lens cleaners sold for camera optics. Ammonia quickly damages silvered or aluminized reflective optics and is not kind to many types of coated optics. Chlorinated solvents are probably going to cause immediate systems damage for most instruments.

If you have Catadioptic or Immersion lenses, Reflective Optics, or IR or UV optics that are not glass or fused silica, consult your manufacturer.

If your manual does not specify a cleaning technique and you are sure that your optic is glass or fused silica:

First step is trying to remove dust by using an air puffer or clean jet of filtered dry air or nitrogen. Do not use fluorocarbon based "Canned Air" products as fluorocarbons damage many optical coatings.

Second step is moistened microfiber cloth using alcohol or acetone to wipe the optic using a figure eight or circular in and out stroking pattern for objectives. Remoisten the cloth, move to a clean segment clean again, if needed. Avoid more then mild pressure, you really just need a gentle wipe. Final clean is usually an alcohol. Avoid "Dry Wiping" without a solvent or fluid, at all costs.

The idea is use a minimal amount of solvent, flooding the apparatus is bad form.

If the containment is stubborn, Acetone, then Alcohol, or Acetone, Peroxide , Alcohol, is the sequence.

When a microfiber cloth is not working or the optic is in a difficult place, the alternative is a wood stick cotton throat swab in a sealed sterile package, one that has NO glue or NO adhesive holding the cotton to the shaft. Plastic stems or cardboard stems are to be avoided at all costs. Wood stemmed swabs get a "Flush and Shake" maneuver to remove gross contamination, then are remoistened and used to clean the optic once. Proper procedure is to roll the swab as you move it along the optic, so that a fresh surface is being used at all times. I teach the ceremonial breaking of the wood shaft to prevent reuse.

For large optics, or dichroic optics, we use the drop and drag technique with lens tissue where possible.

For very critical intra-cavity laser optics or difficult materials such as optical fibers, we use the standard folded lens tissue with hemostats. Learning this technique generally requires instruction, as folding the tissue without touching it, is difficult.

Our service technician taught me to use soap and water on the eye cups, followed by alcohol on lens tissue as a wipe.

I'd suggest the following videos. I imagine that cleaning the microscope to sterilize it may result in a few cases of dirty optics, so I posted this email.

When in doubt, start with the manual, especially if still in warranty.

Thank you for this very helpful thread!
I was just about to setup stricter rules / recommendations for our facility as the COVID19 wave is hitting Switzerland.

So far we just asked everybody to wash hands thoroughly before and after using the microscope but I will now include your points, in particular the one concerning the disinfection of the oculars.
I will also try to motivate people to rather analyse their data remotely from home than imaging new samples.

I misread the article: hydrogen peroxide was tested against a *suspension *of coronavirus particles--it was not tested as a solution to use to disinfect *surfaces*. On surfaces, 70% ethanol for 1 minute was reported to reduce various coronaviruses by factors of 10^2 to 10^4.

I agree that >60% Ethanol degrades the finish and plastics/rubber over time. We have routinely used Ecolabs Peroxide Multi Surface Cleaner and Disinfectant. It contains 8% Hydrogen Peroxide.

Has anyone tried other disinfectants such as 3% peroxide? 70% EtOH tends to remove some paints, decals and rubber/plastic finishes.

Yes Martin,

we use 70% Ethanol for eye-pieces like for each workspace
(computer+microscope+devices,etc.)

They recommended to us considering its volatility and fire point having to use (relatively) "a lot" in a (relatively) small room.

Dear Javier,

here in Milano, as already mentioned by Mario and Dario, we are still available (althouhg at lower level as well) but we implemented, according to Institute Direction, different measures to reduce as much as possibile the access to the Facility and we recommended to our Users to perform only urgent and undelayable experiments.

Facility Staff:
we reduced staff members daily present to the minimum is possible Facility entrance:
- Instruments will be available only from 08:00 to 18:00 from Monday to Friday (instead 24/24h, 7/7d) and instrument usage is not allowed on holidays and outside of this time schedule.
- A disposable glove dispenser has been set up outside the entrance door of the facility. All Users must wear them before entering the Facility and leave them in a dedicated container as they finish their activities.
- the entrance to the Facility will be regulated in order to avoid any form of crowding that sees multiple subjects in the same room at a distance of less than 1.8 meters.
- Instruments use, including microscopes mouse and keyboards, must be done by wearing gloves and, as much as possible, with the own protective glasses (please, remember that Covid-19 seems particularly transmitted by aerosol contact with conjunctive).
- At the end of each session, each User must notify it to the Facility Staff who will disinfect the exposed parts with Ethanol 70% (microscope, mouse, keyboards, touchscreens etc. all parts that could be usually touched by hands or eyes, using a disposable cloths.
- we require only one person per Instrument and, for the same reason, trainings and assisted uses are temporarily suspended.

Instruments maintenance :
no different procedures respect usual maintenance cleaning

Dear listers,

In Madrid, teaching and many other collective activities have been suspended for 15 days because of COVID19. On the other hand, research institutes continue with their normal activity although at a lower level.

In order to reduce as much as possible the spread of the virus, our advanced bioimaging facility is considering to implement additional measures or protocols (beyond common sense).

We would be very grateful if you could share your advice, suggestions and protocols especially regarding the cleaning procedures of the instruments (binocular, focus knobs, switches, stage joysticks, etc) and other measures that affect to the users (wear gloves, etc). We are interested to know about easy and effective cleaning procedures that would not be harmful for the optics, electronics, etc.

I need to add a correction to my earlier statement about the concentration of hydrogen peroxide. The stock is 8% but is diluted to either 0.25 or 0.375%. We also use a health care variety for other uses that is 0.5%.

I agree that >60% Ethanol degrades the finish and plastics/rubber over time. We have routinely used Ecolabs Peroxide Multi Surface Cleaner and Disinfectant. It contains 8% Hydrogen Peroxide.

Has anyone tried other disinfectants such as 3% peroxide? 70% EtOH tends to remove some paints, decals and rubber/plastic finishes.

I have read many, but not all of, the messages in this thread, so apologies if some redundancy.

The following response is a few tips for microscope decontamination for BSL-2 (and in some cases BSL-3), not specifically for the corona virus, but I believe these points apply and some of them are for equipment protection while also fulfilling the goal of microorganism or virus decontamination. They could be extended to decontamination of scopes and ancillary equipment as per users who may be carrying contagious illnesses. I am writing from the point of view of a core facility with scopes used by many people and in scattered locations with minimal or no supervision. These are more practical tips we have learned (the hard way) for operating as part of more thorough protocols.

Paper goods: We do not allow commercial tissues in the lab. We have had people with colds come to use the microscopes and bring their own box of tissues with them to wipe their noses while using our equipment. (Yes, this is true.) They will use these tissues on the equipment if they are within reach. Tissues are likely to scratch optics and leave dust everywhere. Paper goods need to be limited to lens tissue and wood fiber only Kimwipes.

70% EtOH and 10% bleach must be kept in bottles that look completely different. People will get them confused otherwise and bleach sprayed on optics is not good. A bottle with a white top and a bottle with a red top with Sharpie marker writing on the side are not different enough. We solve this problem by supplying the 70% EtOH in clear hand labeled bottles and the bleach in prepackaged Clorox bottles. (The clear bottles are marked with Sharpie and then clear packing tape over the writing to prevent the ink from being washed off because, like immersion oil somehow getting applied to every surface, EtOH will run down the side of the bottle. The Clorox bottles are also labeled in BIG letters, Microscopy, to reduce "borrowing" of them; when you need the bleach, you need it next to the scope, not in somebody else's lab.)

Using prepackaged bleach has another benefit. It is buffered so it remains active longer. The downside of this is that it may leave a fine power residue. However, this is preferential to having people mistaking bottles and spraying bleach on optics. The surfaces may be wiped down a second time with EtOH, water, or lens cleaner to remove the powder.

70% EtOH may damage plastics (other people have mentioned this). Beware overuse on Plexiglas boxes, plastic knobs, and painted surfaces. We have had environmental chambers on scopes develop networks of microcracks due to too much EtOH. If you want to decontaminate these surfaces, we recommend 10% bleach.

Other people have mentioned methanol and its toxicity. It is not used as an antiseptic. Staff use this very sparingly for cleaning optics. There is no methanol available where general users may access it.

People need to be told repeatedly not to spray directly onto the microscope. Demonstration training is necessary for people to see how to saturate a Kimwipe and how to wipe once and dispose. Perhaps the single most misunderstood aspect of cleaning is that the first wipe removes and the second wipe or circular motion smears it around. I try to explain this with analogies such as proper wiping when changing an infant's diaper, the pink stuff in The Cat In The Hat Comes Back, or fine art painting wet-in-wet, but these references are often not shared by our clients. (This is similar to the training how to clean oil off immersion lenses.)

Use of gloves is another big problem, but here are some highlights. Environmental Health and Safety has clear rules that the microscopes may not be used with gloves on. One argument is that prohibiting gloves makes people more cognizant of safe handling. Regardless, this blanket prohibition removes our having to argue with people over glove use. The main point is that if the samples are too dangerous to use with gloves off, then they can't be used on the microscope. However, cleaning up spills and handling cleaning solvents may require use of gloves. The final cleaning should be such that it is safe for anyone to touch without gloves. People really do need to be reminded that other people will be using the resources after them and there is a responsibility to make it safe for the next users. We supply gloves in the room. We keep the rooms stocked with gloves from small to X-large. People will reuse the same gloves if you don't give them a surplus of gloves. People need to be explicitly taught to peel off gloves inside-out and toss in trash or they will neatly pull off each finger and lay the contaminated glove on a table for reuse.

Any instrument should be clean for immediate subsequent use by someone else.
However, time is also decontamination for many pathogens.

Whereas these points are part of routine BSL-2 protocols, they could be extended to protocol(s) for wiping down exterior of equipment, ancillary equipment including keyboards, mice, mouse pads, furniture such as tables, chairs, doorknobs, the spot on the door everyone pushes on (look at an angle to find the worn or dirty spot), etc.

If you or specific staff are going to do the decontamination, then most of the points above are unnecessary. If unsupervised users will be directed to clean up after each use, I recommend heeding the above. All training would need to be demonstration. Ultimately, if you want decontamination done strictly your way, you need to do it yourself.
